Manchester United are very likely to try to strengthen their midfield in the upcoming summer transfer window. Michael Carrick's appointment has helped the club turn around their fortunes, but one cannot make the mistake of thinking that this is a squad capable of competing for the biggest prizes in football, having seen them struggle under multiple managers before this.
Signing quality players in the summer is going to be vital to ensure that Manchester United continue on this newfound upward trajectory.
Midfield has been an area of concern for a while, and Casemiro will be leaving at the end of this season as well. The likes of Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba have been linked with Man Utd for a little while. Now, it looks like another new name has emerged on the club's radar.
According to TEAMtalk, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United have all made enquiries and followed up by sending scouts to watch Caleb Yirenkyi in person.
Brighton & Hove Albion have also been monitoring him, and it looks like they view him as someone who can be a replacement for Baleba, who is expected to leave the club in the summer. Incidentally, Man Utd have been linked with him, and it could open the door for them to make a move.
Yirenkyi currently plays for Nordsjaelland. The 20-year-old midfielder eight appearances for the Ghana national team.
Yirenkyi has even earned comparisons to Ghanaian legend Michael Essien, for his strength, ability to win the ball back and then carry it up the pitch.
Essien was one of the best midfielders in the Premier League, arguably the very best, in his prime. He went on to play for the likes of Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan and more over the course of his legendary career. Carrick will know pretty well what it was like to come up against the Ghanaian icon in midfield from his own time at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.
So, if Manchester United are able to bring in someone of that same ilk, it would have to be considered a major coup for the club.
