Andre Onana could be set for a sensational return to Inter in the summer of 2026. Manchester United are looking to facilitate his exit, and the loan spell in Turkey will not continue.
Onana arrived at Manchester United in 2023 surrounded by high expectations. Signed by his former manager at Ajax, Erik ten Hag, the goalkeeper was coming off an outstanding performance for Inter in the Champions League final against Manchester City, where, despite the defeat, he stood out with several crucial saves and notable composure playing the ball from the back.
However, his two-season stint as the first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford was marked by glaring and costly errors.
United ended up signing Royal Antwerp's goalkeeper, Senne Lammens, in the closing stages of the 2025 summer transfer window, a decision that left the door open for Onana's departure. Though initially reluctant to move to Trabzonspor, he ultimately accepted a loan for the 2025/26 season.
After an investment close to €55 million to sign him from Inter, Onana is considered by many as one of the worst signings in the club's history.
According to reports, Onana has not completely closed the door on a return to Manchester United, though he is reportedly already planning a future away from Old Trafford.
His representatives travelled to Milan this week to hold talks with interested clubs, with Inter noted as one of the possible destinations. The Nerazzurri, currently leading Serie A, are in search of a successor for Yann Sommer, while Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario has also been linked with a possible move to San Siro.
The report adds that Onana still owns the residence he lived in during his first spell at Inter, a detail that reinforces the possibility of a return to Italy. The main obstacle, however, is financial.
To finalise his loan to Trabzonspor, the goalkeeper received a salary increase from the Turkish club, and Inter may not have the necessary financial leeway to match his current wage demands.
Despite the ongoing search for a new destination, Onana acknowledged in December that he feels happy in Turkey and is enjoying his time with Trabzonspor.
In a club-produced video titled 'A Day in the Life of Andre Onana,' the goalkeeper stated: "I am very happy, really. I am living one of the best moments of my life. I have nothing to complain about; I am delighted to be here."
The Cameroonian also highlighted the affection from the fans: "Sometimes I'm driving, and a car pulls up next to me: 'Onana, stop, I want a photo.' I think: 'Yes, but let's do it another way.' But when they see me, they are happy, and so am I. At first it was difficult, but now I understand. They are my people, I love them, and I love this feeling."
Onana further emphasised the passion at the club: "They are incredibly passionate. It is something wonderful, impossible to describe if you are not here. The time I have spent here has been perfect for me. It is a different lifestyle, but it is great. Truly incredible."
