Manchester United seems unable to land a successful signing, even by accident. After spending millions upon millions in recent years, only Bruno Fernandes has truly made his mark at a club where things are not working out and which has grown accustomed to offloading its failed bets.
The latest will be that of Joshua Zirkzee. Everything is now in place for the Dutchman to leave Old Trafford after being an absolute failure and having played, likely, his final minutes against Newcastle without distinction. He will return to Serie A, having landed in England following a great season with Bologna under Thiago Motta.
Zirkzee, 24, will sign for Roma for €40 million, as explained by La Gazzetta dello Sport, a few 'kilos' less than what he cost Manchester United in the summer of 2024. There he played a total of 60 matches and found the net on only 8 occasions, a very insufficient number.
Zirkzee's intention, who was also at Bayern Munich, is to be at the 2026 World Cup, and for that, he knows he needs minutes. Roma already tried to acquire him in 2024, but United beat them to it. It seems that talks with Ricky Massara, Roma's sporting director, have been successful, and the transfer is a matter of putting pen to paper.
Toni Kroos explains why he has always understood himself so well with Brazilian players, mentioning that their different mentalities complement each other. The German recalls his teammates at Real Madrid and other teams, and the key to their success together.
Even so, it does not seem that Ruben Amorim is too satisfied with the situation. "It will be difficult for anyone to leave the club if we do not get a replacement," expressed the Portuguese manager, who will clearly demand a new signing with Zirkzee's departure.
Another forward who has fallen short is Benjamin Sesko. The Slovenian has not yet been able to prove, or demonstrate, that he was the right signing for the team's attack. Without a fixed position and with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha relegating his transfer to a secondary role, Sesko is struggling to translate all the qualities that made major clubs notice him.
