Leny Yoro has regained his place in Manchester United's starting lineup in recent weeks due to the injury absence of center back Lisandro Martinez, having previously had to settle for brief substitute appearances or remaining on the bench for the full 90 minutes. Given that the Frenchman is still adapting to the demands of the English top flight and the instability that has affected Old Trafford in recent years, Ferdinand believes he must be careful when taking on his opponents.
"Leny Yoro is trying to fight too many battles in every game, when physically he is not at the same level," Ferdinand explained on his podcast, Rio Ferdinand Presents. Assessing the difference between the youngster and the veteran forwards of the top flight, the former England captain added: "They are all much more physically developed. Most of the players he plays against, and especially the No. 9s, are stronger than him."
Despite Yoro being on track to surpass the 32 appearances he made last season, Ferdinand insists that survival in the Premier League for a young defender requires more than just pure effort. To avoid being targeted by the division's more physically imposing players, the legendary United No. 5 advised Yoro to be more selective in deciding when to engage in direct physical confrontations on the field.
Ferdinand offered specific tactical advice to the youngster, stating, "So you have to pick your battles. Choose your duel. Which one are you going to choose if you have a 60-40 in your favor? Then go for it."
United will look to bounce back and further solidify its third-place position in the Premier League table, as the fight for Champions League qualification continues to intensify. The Red Devils will face a major challenge when they host Aston Villa at Old Trafford on March 15.
This match is expected to be crucial, as Unai Emery's team sits just one place behind United in the standings and is eager to close the gap.
As the season enters its decisive stretch, Carrick's men are aware of the importance of securing all three points. A victory would not only help them maintain their advantage in the race for a top-four finish but would also strengthen their position in the increasingly tight battle for a place in next season's Champions League.
