Manchester United hosted Wolverhampton Wanderers on Dec. 30 at Old Trafford, in a match corresponding to Matchday 19 of the Premier League.
The team managed by Ruben Amorim took the lead in the 27th minute with a goal from Joshua Zirkzee; however, the match ended tied 1-1 after a goal from Ladislav Krejci just before halftime.
The result left a bitter taste for the Red Devils, who wasted a clear opportunity to climb the table by drawing against the bottom team of the championship.
The Wolves had lost 12 consecutive matches and had not earned a point since early October.
To illustrate Manchester United's humiliation, Wolverhampton is the second team in the history of English football's top division to go 19 matches from the start of a season without a win, alongside Bolton in the 1902-1903 campaign.
At the end of the match, the Portuguese manager was questioned about the disappointing draw against Wolverhampton. In comments to the BBC, Ruben Amorim described the match as strange and stressed the need to move on immediately, as the team must focus on its next commitment of the season against Leeds United this Sunday, Jan. 4, at Elland Road.
Strange match. We knew it would be a different game than Newcastle. Today, we needed more imagination to create goal-scoring chances. We had difficulties in the first half recovering the ball; they crowded the midfield with many men. We tried, but the quality wasn't there. Now we have to recover for the next match.
REUTERS/Scott HeppellAt a press conference, Amorim was candid and stated that "today was not our day." The manager said he was frustrated by his squad's performance but did not use the absences he had for this match as an excuse.
Manchester United will close the year with 30 points from 19 matches, the result of eight wins, six draws, and five losses.
