Tim Sherwood regrets his harsh critiques of Benjamin Sesko, admitting he judged too early. Still, his half-hearted apology won't fool everybody.

Back in early January of this year, former Blackburn Rovers midfielder, now pundit Tim Sherwood, made some very harsh and controversial comments on Manchester United striker Benjamin Sesko.

Speaking on Sky Sports after United's 2-2 draw away to Burnley, Sherwood said: "I think the positive is [Benjamin] Sesko scoring, he's got two goals (in that game), hopefully he can get some confidence from that.

It's took six months for him to turn up at United. I'm pleased for the lad, he's had a tough run of it, I [would have] had him off at half time, never to wear the shirt again. Listen, I stand by what I say - he's not good enough to play for Man United.

He's turned up for one game against Burnley who are gonna get relegated. Look, fair play to him, hopefully he gets some confidence and we start seeing something different from him - I'll put him in my fantasy team now (laughs)."

Just incredibly harsh, belittling comments on such a big platform. Even if you don't rate a player, rightly or wrongly, there is always a line and you should always remain professional.

Simply put, Sherwood did not do that.

Speaking on Sam Allardyce's No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, the 57 year old apologised for the comments: "I went early. I owe the kid an apology, because Michael Carrick has all of a sudden put a battery charger in him. And like Rene [Meulensteen] said, he's playing to his strengths.

Now, even when he's coming off the bench (he's making an impact. It was an injury to [Patrick] Dorgu which is the reason why he's getting a lot more opportunities now, and he's another one (Dorgu proving him wrong).

Some of the goals he scored now. I'm judging him on what I saw in the early part of the season, under Ruben Amorim. I saw - I'm judging him on not having the character to stand up and want to take a penalty at Grimsby, but now I'm seeing the boy with his chest out.

I saw him run and score that goal with the three of them linked up - the three new signings at Everton with pace. I said he shouldn't be anywhere near a Manchester United shirt - I will go back on that and just say I'm going to give him time."

So, he hasn't actually apologised for making over-the-top, bullying comments. He's just apologised because he's had a very good run of form. So if Sesko had continued to struggle, he would find his comments acceptable. Not good enough.

Plus, ridiculous to say he is only playing because Dorgu is injured. Not only is it slyly belittling him again, it also isn't true. Once the Danish international picked up his injury, it still took Sesko a few weeks to enter the starting XI.
