When Andre Onana joined Manchester United, fans were excited as they were gaining the goalkeeper who had just been awarded many people's man of the match award from the Champions League final, despite losing to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City.
United faithful began to get even more excited when they realised Onana would be playing under the manager who made him the brilliant goalkeeper he was, Erik ten Hag. But alas, that excitement was not needed.
It's fair to say Onana failed to live up to expectations during his time at Old Trafford, so much so that Rúben Amorim demoted him to second-choice goalkeeper for Altay Bayindir at the start of the season, despite the Turkish shotstopper also struggling for form.
Onana's last United game was against Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, and the less said about his performance in that game, the better. The Cameroon international looked below League Two ability, the league in which Grimsby compete in.
After that game, Onana was loaned to Trabzonspor for the remainder of the season, but without any option to buy in the deal, he will return to the club in the summer.
In recent weeks, some reports had suggested that Onana could return to the club to compete with Senne Lammens for the starting spot, with Onana himself ready to prove himself.
However, in a new update, Fabrizio Romano has said: " It is over with Manchester United. The rumours on Onana staying and trying to compete for the first goalkeeper spot [are not true].
"Rumours on Onana going back to Inter Milan as a possibility in the summer [are also not true]." Romano continued to explain that Inter are looking at Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
"Also, between Onana and Man United," Romano said. "The intention in the summer is to find a different solution, is to find a different club. Eventually, we will see what happens with Trabzonspor, if they can keep him or not, we will see, or other clubs in Europe, but the intention is to find a solution for Andre Onana."
This will leave Senne Lammens as the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper at Old Trafford next summer, with rumours of Altay Bayindir also looking for a new club for more regular game time.
Lammens has been sensational for Manchester United since his Deadline Day arrival, despite having never played in the Premier League, or even a top-five league, before the move.
With Onana looking likely to leave United in the summer, Old Trafford could be set for a goalkeeping overhaul.
Senne Lammens will remain as the first-choice, but Jason Wilcox may need to sign a new goalkeeper to play second fiddle, unless he wants to trust Radek Vitek, who has been on loan at Bristol City this season. Even if Wilcox wants Vitek to return, there are no guarantees the youngster will settle for being a backup.
Tom Heaton and Dermot Mee are United's third and fourth-choice goalkeepers, but they could both leave Old Trafford, too. Heaton is coming towards the end of his playing career, and Mee's is yet to really begin.
Heaton could remain as part of the coaching staff, perhaps helping the younger age groups if not the first team, but Mee will almost certainly move on to play regular football.
