Manchester United have signed Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa on a five-year contract as Michael Carrick continues his midfield rebuild.
Manchester United have wrapped up the signing of Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa, bringing more Premier League experience into Michael Carrick’s squad as preparations for the 2026/27 season gather pace.
At 29, Tielemans heads to United after three seasons at Villa, where he established himself as a key player under Unai Emery and played a central role in their Europa League triumph last season.
Last season, the midfielder featured in 35 league games, chipped in with two goals and seven assists, and then captained Belgium to the World Cup quarter-finals.
United are getting a player who knows English football inside out. Tielemans first arrived in the Premier League with Leicester City back in 2019, initially on loan from Monaco before making the move permanent.
He made 195 appearances for Leicester and famously scored the winner against Chelsea in the 2021 FA Cup final. After moving to Villa on a free in 2023, he quickly became one of Emery’s most trusted names in midfield.
United have now tied him down until 2031. It’s a long-term commitment for a player who already brings plenty of experience to the table.
Tielemans described the move as a proud moment and outlined his intention to compete for the biggest honours at Old Trafford. Director of football Jason Wilcox highlighted his composure, creativity, leadership and consistency across seven Premier League seasons when explaining the club’s decision to sign him.
How Tielemans fits into Carrick’s plans is now one of the big questions as the new season approaches.
Tielemans is comfortable taking the ball under pressure, moving play through midfield and slotting into a range of central roles. His passing and knack for breaking lines should give Carrick more ways to control games, and his experience could be a real asset alongside the younger Santos.
For Villa, it’s a significant loss. Tielemans had become a key part of Emery’s midfield, and his exit comes just after a season where Villa celebrated European silverware.
United, meanwhile, have wasted no time reshaping the squad after sealing a Champions League return. Tielemans comes in as a proven Premier League performer, not a project, so the expectation is he’ll make an impact straight away.
Unlike many new signings, Tielemans shouldn’t need much time to settle. He’s already spent seven years in the Premier League with Leicester and Villa.
His arrival gives Carrick extra experience, control and creativity in midfield as United gear up for their Champions League return. With Santos also through the door, the new-look midfield is already starting to take shape ahead of the Premier League kick-off.
