Bayern Munich have confirmed Vincent Kompany is receiving hospital treatment after collapsing on Friday, with his coaching staff taking charge.

Vincent Kompany is receiving hospital treatment after collapsing at Bayern Munich's training ground on Friday, the club has confirmed.

The 40-year-old collapsed while watching a session involving Bayern's reserve team at Säbener Straße. Bayern has not disclosed the cause or indicated how long he might remain in hospital, although the club said he would undergo thorough examinations and continue receiving medical care.

The incident comes after a difficult week for Kompany, who had been dealing with a viral illness before Wednesday's Champions League draw against Arsenal. He returned to the dugout for that match after missing the previous day's training session and pre-match press conference on medical advice.

Bayern's board member for sport, Max Eberl, said there would be no pressure on the Belgian to resume his duties before he was ready.

"The health of Vincent Kompany is our utmost priority. At FC Bayern, we will do everything to ensure he recovers quickly. Vinnie is receiving all necessary medical care and support, as well as all the time he needs."

Kompany was already forced into a reduced role during Bayern's 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig last Saturday. While he sat on the bench, assistants Aaron Danks and René Marić handled much of the touchline work, and Eberl spoke to the media afterwards on his behalf.

Danks then handled Tuesday's press conference before Arsenal visited Munich, explaining that Kompany had leg pain and had been advised to rest. He also admitted that getting the former Manchester City captain to step away from football was not straightforward.

Kompany nevertheless returned on Wednesday as Bayern drew 2-2 with Arsenal. Afterwards, he said he had pushed himself despite feeling unwell and not paying enough attention to his body's warning signs.

Nothing in Bayern's latest statement establishes that the virus caused Friday's collapse, and no official diagnosis has been made public.

Bayern travel to Freiburg on Sunday, with the Bundesliga leaders now preparing to play without their head coach on the touchline. The club has not set a timetable for his return.

Eberl confirmed that the existing coaching staff would take responsibility in Kompany's absence.

"His coaching team, which we fully trust, will take over his duties. All of us at FC Bayern wish Vinnie a speedy recovery."

Danks and Marić have already taken on additional responsibility during Kompany's recent illness so the players are familiar with the arrangements. The club confirming that his coaching staff will take charge of the first team while he undergoes medical examinations.

The Belgian took charge of Bayern in 2024 after leaving Burnley and has since led the club to back-to-back Bundesliga titles. He has remained closely involved in training and match preparation throughout his time in Munich, with his return against Arsenal midweek coming despite medical advice to rest earlier in the week.

Sunday's trip to Freiburg is followed by a German Cup fixture against Magdeburg on Wednesday, with Borussia Dortmund visiting the Allianz Arena next weekend. Bayern have not indicated whether Kompany could return for either match, leaving his coaching staff responsible for preparations until a further update is provided.
