Norway 2-1 Ivory Coast: Haaland Winner Breaks Ivorian Hearts

Erling Haaland delivered when Norway needed him most as they beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in their World Cup Round of 32 tie.

Antonio Nusa put Norway in front, only for Amad Diallo to pull Ivory Coast level. But with the match finely balanced, Haaland stepped up late on to settle it and send Stale Solbakken’s side through.

Norway were far from fluent for much of the night, but knockout football is rarely about style points. When the key moments arrived, they found enough quality—and their main man up front made the difference.

After resting key players in the group-stage loss to France, Norway brought back their big names. Haaland and Martin Odegaard both returned to the starting line-up.

It did not take long for that attacking quality to show in the first half.

Odegaard was involved in the opener, picking out Nusa, who finished superbly to give Norway the lead. It was a composed goal in a match where space was already at a premium.

Ivory Coast brought physicality and pace, always carrying a direct threat, but whenever Norway managed to work the ball into the final third, they looked the more precise side.

The Ivorians refused to fade, though.

After the break, Ivory Coast pushed higher up the pitch and eventually found their equaliser. Diallo, fresh off the bench, made an instant impact.

The Manchester United winger drove at the Norway defence and finished powerfully to make it 1-1, giving Ivory Coast fresh belief and briefly putting Norway under real pressure.

Ivory Coast had the momentum, and Norway suddenly found themselves needing to regroup after letting their lead slip. They did not respond with fireworks, but they kept their composure and stayed in the game until the decisive moment came.

With five minutes left on the clock, Haaland finally found the finish Norway had been waiting for.

The Manchester City striker was in the right place to turn in the winner from close range, underlining once more his ruthless touch in the box. It was not the most spectacular goal he will ever score, but it was exactly what Norway needed.

That goal also marked another milestone for Haaland, who now has 60 goals in just 53 games for his country.

Ivory Coast pressed again in the dying minutes, but Norway stood firm and saw the job through. For the Ivorians, it was a tough exit after a tournament that had offered real promise.

Solbakken’s side were far from perfect, and there will be things to work on before the next round. But in knockout football, finding a way is what counts, and Norway managed exactly that.

Their reward is a last-16 meeting with Brazil, who came from behind to beat Japan 2-1 in their own Round of 32 tie.

That will be a very different test. Norway will need to defend for longer spells, manage Brazil’s pace in wide areas and make the most of any moments that fall to Odegaard, Nusa and Haaland.

They survived Ivory Coast’s second-half response, leaned on their biggest players and moved one step deeper into the World Cup. Brazil are next, and Norway now have the chance to turn a solid knockout win into something much bigger.
