PSG faces a familiar playoff challenge. Another French opponent looms, mirroring last season's path as they battle Monaco for Champions League progression.

The UEFA Champions League playoff draw took place this Friday in Nyon, and Paris Saint-Germain drew AS Monaco, whom it will also face in Ligue one next March.

History repeats itself for PSG. As last year, PSG must go through the playoff round, and as last year, PSG drew a French club. After Brest, it is AS Monaco that will be in the path of Luis Enrique's men next February: the first leg on the 17th or 18th at Louis II, the return leg on the 24th or 25th at Parc des Princes. This means no trip to Baku to face Qarabag.

The Playoff Draw

  • AS Monaco vs. PSG
  • Benfica vs. Real Madrid
  • Qarabag vs. Newcastle United
  • Bodo/Glimt vs. Inter Milan
  • Galatasaray vs. Juventus
  • Borussia Dortmund vs. Atalanta
  • Club Bruges vs. Atletico Madrid
  • Olympiacos vs. Bayer Leverkusen

In a full crisis since the appointment of Sebastien Pocognoli, AS Monaco won 1-0 against PSG in Ligue one last November in what Luis Enrique then considered his team's worst match of the season.

Since then, Monaco has suffered four defeats and one draw in Ligue one but remains alive in the Coupe de France and therefore in the Champions League.

Monaco secured its qualification for the playoffs on Wednesday night thanks to its 0-0 draw against Juventus, which allowed it to tally 10 points at the end of the league phase. In the Champions League this season, Monaco has a record of two wins, two defeats, and four draws.

Monaco won 1-0 against Bodo/Glimt and Galatasaray, drew against Manchester City (2-2), Tottenham (0-0), Pafos (2-2), and Juventus (0-0), and lost 6-1 against Real Madrid and 4-1 against Bruges. Monaco is the worst attack among the teams still qualified, with only eight goals scored in eight matches.
