Chelsea has just been dealt a big blow ahead of their must-win match against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

Two days after their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle, Chelsea trained late Monday morning and several unexpected absentees were noted ahead of the Champions League round of 16 second leg against PSG. Blues captain Reece James was notably absent and will miss several weeks, according to The Athletic.

Liam Rosenior had decided not to rotate his team last Saturday for the home match against Newcastle and his choice proved costly as Chelsea lost 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. Compared to the 5-2 defeat against PSG, the Blues coach had simply replaced his goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen with Roberto Sanchez, before explaining after the match that the Dane had injured his groin the day before in training.

Chelsea were also without Pedro Neto against the Magpies, who were suspended and the London club will know during the day whether the Portuguese winger is suspended for the Chelsea vs. PSG match this Tuesday evening. UEFA has examined his case following his push on a ball boy in the first leg and should communicate its decision in the afternoon, according to RMC Sport.

Meanwhile, a training session took place this Monday at Cobham, the Blues' training center, starting at 12:15 p.m. and during the 15-minute press availability, local media noted several unexpected absences. Blues captain Reece James was thus absent, he who played 90 minutes at the Parc des Princes last Wednesday and as many on Saturday against Newcastle.

And according to The Athletic, Reece James has injured his hamstring and will be out for several weeks. He is therefore already ruled out for the Chelsea-PSG clash this Tuesday evening. A huge blow for the Blues.

Another starter from Wednesday and last Saturday, but replaced by Liam Delap at halftime against the Magpies, Malo Gusto was also missing from the call this Monday at training on the eve of Chelsea vs. PSG, as well as winger Jamie Gittens and Filip Jorgensen. Will these three other absentees of the day all be absent on Tuesday against PSG? Liam Rosenior should say more in a news conference this Monday, starting at 4 p.m.

The good news on the London side, however, concerns Brazilian winger Estevão, who was present this Monday at the start of the collective session after missing more than a month of competition due to a hamstring injury. His return to the squad for tomorrow remains to be confirmed. Levi Colwill trained again with his teammates but should not be involved in Chelsea vs. PSG, as he is just returning from a serious knee injury that kept him off the field for nearly 8 months.
