Liam Rosenior was in a news conference on Friday, on the eve of Chelsea vs. Newcastle and four days before Chelsea vs. PSG. The Blues manager revisited his goalkeeper choice at the Parc and wanted to express his confidence ahead of the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
Fifth in the Premier League, three points behind Manchester United and Aston Villa, Chelsea hosts Newcastle (12th) this Saturday at Stamford Bridge on matchday 30 of the Premier League.
On the eve of this match between two teams still in contention in the Champions League (Newcastle drew 1-1 with Barcelona in the first leg), Liam Rosenior appeared in a news conference and began by providing updates on his injured players: "Jamie (Gittens) is back in training, which is great. Estevão is still a little behind. We want to be cautious with Estevão because of the nature of his hamstring injury. We don't want it to recur at a crucial moment in the season. We'll see how he feels for Tuesday's match against PSG."
But two days after his team's 5-2 defeat in Paris and four days before the return leg in London, Rosenior was unsurprisingly questioned again about his highly contested decision to start Filip Jorgensen instead of Robert Sanchez at the Parc des Princes. English journalists asked him whether he believed he had goalkeepers talented enough for a club like Chelsea, implying that he did not.
"Absolutely," Rosenior replied. "I obviously made the decision to play Filip (Jorgensen) against Aston Villa, and his performance was exceptional; he contributed to a very good victory against a very good team. I think his performance for 75 minutes was magnificent (against PSG). He makes one mistake (on Vitinha's goal), we are punished, and we lose a match that we absolutely should not have lost. Rob Sanchez is one of the best goalkeepers in the league. The quality of these two players at this level is without question. It's more about my decision for each match and the direction I choose to take at that position."
A decision that will still be closely scrutinized this Saturday against the Magpies. Is Jorgensen mentally ready to play again as soon as tomorrow? "Of course," Rosenior said. "Everyone makes mistakes in life, in football. It's the way you bounce back, the way you react to a setback, that counts. I have no problem and no lack of confidence in either of my goalkeepers. I'm really looking forward to getting back on the field after what happened in the last 15 minutes on Wednesday."
While statistics are clearly not in Chelsea's favor ahead of the return leg, Rosenior was asked whether it might be better for his club to prioritize the Premier League and therefore this match against Newcastle rather than next Tuesday's match against PSG.
"I'm not prioritizing any competition," the former Strasbourg manager replied. "Given the way we play, we want to win the next match. I've seen teams overcome three-goal deficits at home in the Champions League on numerous occasions. Given the number of chances we created in that match, after analyzing it, we still have very good chances if we manage to score the first goal in the first half on Tuesday evening, after this important match tomorrow."
PSG, meanwhile, will not play this weekend since their match against Nantes on matchday 26 of Ligue 1 has been postponed until next month. Luis Enrique's men are resting on Friday and will return to the Campus training ground Saturday morning at 11 a.m. (France), before training on Sunday at the same time, still behind closed doors.
