Impressed by the individual quality of PSG's players, Liam Rosenior was very frustrated after his Chelsea's 5-2 defeat at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday. The Blues manager, who took responsibility for his choice to start Filip Jörgensen, particularly lamented Paris' fifth goal, which virtually condemns his team ahead of the return leg.
Chelsea held a good 2-2 draw at the Parc des Princes until the 74th minute, when the poor clearance by goalkeeper Jörgensen. But the player who had been preferred to Robert Sanchez was pressed by Bradley Barcola, which allowed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to lay the ball back to Vitinha, who then showcased his technical precision to lob the Blues' goalkeeper and put PSG back in front.
A late brace from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia (86', 90+4') then allowed PSG to pull away and have a three-goal advantage before the return leg at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday.
"It's a very disappointing result," Liam Rosenior said in his post-match news conference. "For a large part of the match, I was really very satisfied with our performance. The last 15 or 20 minutes were crazy in many ways. It's my fault. I have to improve in those moments. Setbacks and mistakes, they happen. But you have to stay calm in those moments, including me. And we didn't do that, and we were punished by a very good team, which makes the scoreline painful because for 75 minutes, we were level and in the match."
The former Strasbourg coach took responsibility for the defeat and his strong choice to prefer Filip Jörgensen over Robert Sanchez. "Players make mistakes. Filip isn't the first to make one. It's part of football. Obviously, it's bitter... At that moment, at 2-2, I think we were in a dominant position. We were within inches of making it 3-3. I think João Pedro's goal was offside by a centimeter. But at the highest level, in the Champions League, everything comes down to very small margins. And the fifth goal was the most painful. We didn't manage the basic game plan. They scored a fifth goal and made it very difficult for us."
With a three-goal deficit before the return leg, Chelsea is indeed in a very uncomfortable position and no longer seems to truly believe. "Even at 4-2, given the quality of the chances we created through our buildup play and our possession, even if it wasn't the best result, we remained in contention ahead of the home return at Stamford Bridge," Rosenior said. "The fifth goal, that's the one that really hurts..."
But Liam Rosenior acknowledged that PSG had great individual qualities, as if to say that Parisians had not stolen their victory. "In the Premier League, there are no Dembélé, Doué, Kvaratskhelia, Vitinha, or João Neves. It's an exceptional team. They're exceptional European champions. I think that's why I'm so disappointed, because our performance up until the third goal was really very good. We can't talk about it anymore, given the result. But we have to manage those moments better and especially take into account the quality of the players we're facing."
