The recipient of the yellow card went somewhat unnoticed during the live broadcast, but a Paris Saint-Germain player was indeed cautioned last Thursday against Marseille in the Trophee des Champions (French Super Cup), even though he was not on the field.
Before being eliminated by Paris FC on Monday night in the round of 16 of the French Cup, Paris Saint-Germain lifted the Champions Trophy in Kuwait last Thursday following an epic match and a victorious penalty shootout. The great hero of the end of the match, Gonçalo Ramos, scored the equalizing goal in the 95th minute with a composed, volleyed finish.
Ten minutes earlier, the Portuguese goal scorer had not yet entered the game but was warming up on the sideline. And in the 84th minute of the PSG vs. Marseille match, as Leonardo Balerdi exited with an injury and Emerson prepared to take a throw-in on the left side, referee Thomas Leonard walked toward Ramos to caution him.
It was not very clear during the live broadcast due to the camera angle, but upon reviewing the match, the identity of the cautioned Parisian is in no doubt, and it was indeed Ramos, which the match report later confirmed. "You're not asking for that!" the referee even repeated to the Portuguese player at the moment of the caution.
Gonçalo Ramos was cautioned ten minutes before his goal. What Ramos said to the referee is not really known in this instance, but it is possible he complained about the positioning of the Italo-Brazilian fullback being too high at the moment of his throw-in. This yellow card did not prevent Luis Enrique from bringing on his super-sub in the 89th minute, with the success we now know.
This season, the LFP has modified its regulations concerning suspensions for an accumulation of yellow cards. A player is now automatically suspended for one match after receiving five yellow cards, without the previous concept of a 10-match period. This rule encompasses Ligue 1, the French Cup, and the Champions Trophy.
So far, no Paris Saint-Germain player has been suspended for an accumulation of yellow cards, but several players are already at three yellow cards, including Gonçalo Ramos.
