Although Paris Saint-Germain's UEFA list is not expected to undergo major changes, Monaco's will evolve significantly due to the transfer window and injuries to several key players.
Clubs qualified for the Champions League playoffs and round of 16 have until this Thursday, Feb. 5, at midnight to update their UEFA list for the new phase of the competition. And the clubs concerned can register a maximum of three new players compared to their list from last September.
An important point, in place for a few years now, any or all players from this quota of three can have played for another club in the qualification phase, playoffs, or league phase of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, or UEFA Conference League.
For PSG, this means that Dro Fernandez, who played with Barcelona against Olympiacos last Oct. 21, with an assist to his name, will indeed be able to join PSG's List A for the remainder of the Champions League. Find the (rare) expected changes to PSG's list here or via the link below.
PSG's next opponent in the playoffs, AS Monaco, will make no less than seven changes to its List A, with four players removed and three added. AS Monaco's two winter transfer window signings, Belgian central defender Wout Faes and Ivorian winger Simon Adingra, will thus be integrated into the Monaco list, along with Senegalese right winger Krepin Diatta.
Krepin Diatta had not been registered on Monaco's initial list last September, but following the injury to Denis Zakaria, Monaco took advantage of the new UEFA regulations to temporarily replace its defensive midfielder with Diatta, who was able to play against Manchester City and then Tottenham. But two months later, once Zakaria recovered, Diatta was again removed from the UEFA list and replaced by the Swiss player.
This time, the Senegalese will indeed be registered on Monaco's List A, which will remove several players, including Paul Pogba. The 2018 world champion has only made the bench twice in the Champions League this season, but has not played a minute. Still hampered by injuries, Pogba is struggling and has played only 30 minutes in Ligue 1 this season, his last appearance dating back to Dec. 5.
Monaco informed the press on Wednesday that Pogba would not be registered for the second phase of the competition. "There is no clear answer. The medical staff is focused on finding solutions, first for him to return to the pitch before matches. He continues to recover from his calf injury," Monaco's general director Thiago Scuro painfully tried to explain to the media yesterday.
According to L'Equipe and Nice-Matin, the injured Mohammed Salisu and Takumi Minamino will also be removed from Monaco's List A. Logical since both have suffered ACL tears and will be unavailable for many more months.
Finally, Franco-Nigerian striker George Ilenikhena (three appearances in the Champions League this season) was transferred to Al-Ittihad this winter for nearly €33 million and will obviously no longer be on Monaco's List A. Present on Monaco's List B and having appeared twice this season in the Champions League, Lucas Michal was loaned to Metz this winter and will also not face PSG on the upcoming Feb. 17 and 25 during the playoffs.
