Orchestrator and captain of Newcastle, Bruno Guimaraes injured his right ankle on Wednesday night during the Magpies' 3-0 victory against PSV Eindhoven. Before facing Aston Villa this Sunday, then Paris Saint-Germain next Wednesday, the English club is worried about its Brazilian midfielder.
Eddie Howe knows better than anyone that there is a Newcastle with Bruno Guimaraes and another without. One statistic perfectly reflects this dependence on the Brazilian and was brought to his attention this Friday at a press conference by an English journalist: in four years at Newcastle, Bruno Guimaraes has missed 10 Premier League matches and his team has never won without him (four losses and six draws).
"I was wondering how long it would take before that question came up – thank you for that," Howe joked this Friday. "As for finding how to play without him, he is an extremely talented footballer. A very creative footballer. No matter where he plays, he has the ability to change the course of a match. If we have to do without him for a match, we must find a solution, find another way to compose the team or to play. We will try to explore all possibilities if he is not available, but we hope he can play."
On Wednesday night, Bruno Guimaraes indeed had to leave the field in the 45th minute after hurting his right ankle against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League. "Yes, he is a bit sore. It's an ankle problem. It's a bit swollen. We've just seen him, and we hope it's not serious. Hard to say," his coach confided after the match.
"I think Bruno is the kind of player who never wants to come off. He always wants to play, so the fact that he came off worries us. We will do everything we can to get him back on his feet as soon as possible."
This Friday, Eddie Howe did not rule out the possibility that the former Lyon player could be on the field as early as Sunday for the clash against Aston Villa, but implied he would not take excessive risk.
"We hope it's not serious. The severity of his injury is still unknown. He was quite positive after the match. He is someone who never gives up. We are going to give him every chance this weekend. We will try to make the right decision with Bruno; he is an essential player, an inspiration. We need him, but we also need him to be fit, available, and capable of giving his best. So we will try to calculate everything and make the right decision."
While waiting to learn more about Bruno Guimaraes' condition, Newcastle will certainly be without several injured players next Wednesday against PSG: Swiss central defender Fabian Schar underwent ankle surgery in January and will not return before April, English right-back Valentino Livramento is injured in the hamstring and will not return before March, while Swedish midfielder Emil Krafth has a knee injury and will not return immediately.
Newcastle, on the other hand, could recover its English winger Jacob Murphy against PSG, as well as its imposing central defender Dan Burn, who has been absent since mid-December due to a chest contusion. Absent since November, Danish striker William Osula is also close to a return and could be at Parc des Princes next Wednesday.
For its part, PSG has seven absences this Friday night against Auxerre, including Fabian Ruiz, who took a knock to the knee against Sporting CP on Tuesday night. But several Parisian players could make their return next Wednesday against Newcastle, from Joao Neves to Achraf Hakimi, including Nuno Mendes, Lee Kang-in, and possibly Ruiz.
