The day after Paris Saint-Germain's comprehensive 5-0 victory over Marseille, the French press is unanimous: Luis Enrique's side humiliated and outclassed Roberto De Zerbi's team. This provoked a great sense of shame on the part of the Marseille press.
On this Monday, February 9, Parisian supporters woke up "with a smile," as Ousmane Dembele had predicted Sunday night after his magnificent brace against Marseille and this comprehensive 5-0 PSG victory. Reading the French press has a sweet taste this morning, it's true.
Let's start with the sports outlet L'Equipe, which offers two front pages this Monday: one on the fine victory of the mixed relay team of the French biathlon team at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and another, obviously, on the "Classique" won 5-0 by PSG. "A world of difference," thus headlines the sports media on its front page, with a photo of a very demonstrative Ousmane Dembele's joy after one of his goals.
"The price for big nights," headlines the newspaper on its inside pages, before recalling that PSG had never before beaten Marseille by such a score, making this result even more delicious: "Marseille had opened all the doors, and PSG joyfully rushed through them, punishing its rival in historic proportions."
"Marseille, fanny in Paris!" exclaims Le Parisien, which dedicates a box to the "Classique" at the top of its front page for the day. Inside, the regional outlet speaks of a "masterful slap" and praises in its player ratings the performance of Nuno Mendes, "unstoppable," and Ousmane Dembele, back to his best level. The Portuguese left-back gets an 8/10 in Le Parisien, while the Ballon d'Or winner gets a 9/10.
But let's not waste more time and head straight to Marseille to discover this superb front page of the local outlet, La Provence. On Sunday morning, the Marseille media spoke of the last chance match for the Marseille side in reference to the title race. This Monday morning, it's a gigantic "Nuls" (Zeros) that bars the front page of the Provençal newspaper, with a photo of the distress of the Marseille defense to top it all off.
In its inside pages, the Marseille newspaper's special correspondent in Paris does not mince words to describe his feeling, that of an "intergalactic shame." "As always, or almost always, at the Parc des Princes, the Olympiens were spanked by the European champion. If recent 'Clasicos' suggested a close match… that was not at all the case," he writes in the introduction to his match debrief.
The Marseille outlet also revisits the "shipwreck of Balerdi," guilty of at least three Parisian goals. La Provence also protests that Vitinha was not sent off early in the match after his studs-up challenge on the Argentine, but readily admits that the Marseille captain was below par. "A catastrophic match for Balerdi, another one," concludes the newspaper, which spares few on the Marseille side, except perhaps Quinten Timber, who started his match well, "before getting overwhelmed in midfield and suffering against the Parisian midfielders."
Also noteworthy is the exceptional front page of the Sports section of La Provence, with a photo of a dejected Balerdi and Medina, and this headline: "The underachievers in the capital."
On the side of the neutral press, Ouest-France salutes PSG's return to its "best level" and notes that the score could have been even heavier since the Parisians hit the woodwork four times. Le Figaro Sport this Monday revisits a "one-sided 'Classique,'" which saw PSG "humiliate Marseille and retake the lead of Ligue 1."
Finally, La Voix du Nord also revisits in its edition of the day this 5-0 victory by a PSG that was "impressive against a Marseille in defensive disarray," which allows Luis Enrique's men to take a two-point lead "over the men of Pierre Sage, who was present Sunday night at the Parc des Princes to observe Paris, who will come to Bollaert on the coming April 12 for a clash that could be decisive in the title race."
