While Atletico Madrid traveled to Paris to try to advance the transfer of Lee Kang-in, Paris Saint-Germain has no intention of opening the door to the player's departure. And the South Korean must decide his future, between a desire for Spain and an extension in Paris.
The arrival of Atletico Madrid's sporting director, Mateu Alemany, in Paris this Friday to negotiate with PSG demonstrates the firm interest of the Madrid club in Lee Kang-in, the versatile 24-year-old left-footer whom Spain knows very well as he was trained and began his professional career there.
Atletico has even made him its top offensive target this winter, knowing that the Madrid club already wanted to bring him in when Lee was shining at Mallorca.
But the other Madrid club also knows that the matter is far from easy. Not only is Lee valued at over 40 million euros (around $46 million), but PSG is also in a strong position, with a contract running until June 2028.
According to L'Equipe, the French capital club would have no intention of letting the South Korean leave this winter, with Luis Enrique holding the player in high esteem.
The French outlet also states that a decision regarding Lee Kang-in's future will be made next summer, implying that a departure this winter is unlikely.
Madrid's sports press today is more moderate on this subject, notably because the South Korean is reportedly genuinely tempted by the idea of joining Atletico this winter, with a potentially more significant role than in Paris where he is a regularly used substitute more than a starter.
While the two clubs maintain excellent relations, Lee Kang-in thus finds himself facing an important choice.
On one side, PSG, which wants to extend him even though his contract expires in 2028; on the other, Atletico, which has made him a priority and would offer him a more favorable context in terms of playing time, as well as a return to Spain.
Paris holds the keys, given the length of the contract, but Lee also has his say, assures AS, and Atletico is a very attractive suitor in the player's eyes.
