Paris Saint-Germain were handed a 3-0 defeat by Chelsea in the Club World Cup final. Cole Palmer scored two brilliant goals before setting up a third for Joao Pedro. And at the end of the day, they were deserving winners and must be congratulated for their success.
For PSG, it is now about going back to the drawing board and figuring out where it all went wrong. After winning the semi-final by a 4-0 scoreline against Real Madrid, they were heavy favourites going into the final against Chelsea.
It is not just about this result, but the future as well, as they could very well face Chelsea in the Champions League next season. That is a team that could be set up for years to come, just like PSG.
Another talking point coming out of the final was the post-match scuffle involving both teams. Luis Enrique, who was also involved in the incident, has admitted his regret at how things played out. He said:
“At the end of the match, there was a situation that I believe could have been avoided by everyone.
“My objective and my intention, as always, is to try to win over the players so that there are no more problems. Internally, there is a lot of tension, a lot of pressure.
“And from there, there is a series of shoves from a lot of people, which I think we should all avoid and which should not happen again.”
Incidents like those should certainly be avoided, especially at this level of the game. Both PSG and Chelsea are two of the premier teams in world football.
But then, mistakes happen, and it is important to learn from them. While the mood might be down, it is important to remember that PSG played out a great tournament and the final was the culmination of a historic season. Now, they need to rest up and get ready to challenge for everything once again next season.
