Two days before the PSG vs. Chelsea showdown, Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes in the Champions League round of 16 first leg, there are already four absentees to note, including two Parisians. But several other players are also uncertain. Here is an update.
Beaten 3-1 Friday night by Monaco, PSG returns to the Champions League this Wednesday night at the Parc des Princes against a Chelsea side that was able to rotate its squad Saturday in the FA Cup during its lackluster qualification against Welsh side Wrexham. The good news on the Parisian side is that Ousmane Dembélé and Senny Mayulu returned to competition against Monaco and will be fit to face Chelsea on Wednesday.
Absent since the playoff second leg against Monaco on Feb. 25 due to an ankle problem, Joao Neves should make his return to the Parisian squad against the Blues, according to the French press. Will the Portuguese midfielder be able to start against Chelsea on Wednesday night, however? That remains to be seen.
One thing is certain: Luis Enrique will once again be without his Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz for this first leg, as he continues to recover from a blow to the knee sustained against Sporting CP... last Jan. 20. Another confirmed absence on the Parisian side is that of Quentin Ndjantou, who underwent surgery on his hamstring last month and is out for several more weeks.
Barring any bad surprise early this week, all other Parisians will be fit to face Chelsea on Wednesday, even Marquinhos, who did not play a minute in Ligue 1 against Le Havre and then Monaco on Friday and has therefore not played since the second leg against Monaco in the Champions League nearly two weeks ago. In the meantime, he became a father for the fourth time.
On Chelsea's side, Liam Rosenior will also have two absentees against PSG, starting with his central defender Levi Colwill, who played in the Club World Cup final against Paris last July 13, but then seriously injured his knee. Colwill is on Chelsea's UEFA list, but will not return to competition before May, in the best-case scenario.
The London club will also be without its young Portuguese midfielder Dario Essugo against Paris. Recruited last summer from Sporting CP, the latter has suffered a string of injuries this season and played his first minutes only last Saturday against Wrexham in the FA Cup, even delivering an assist on the 3-2 goal scored by Alejandro Garnacho. But Essugo is not registered for the Champions League and will not play on Wednesday.
In addition to these two absences, Chelsea has two uncertain players ahead of its match against the defending European champion: Estevao and Jamie Gittens. The young Brazilian winger missed Chelsea's last three matches due to a hamstring injury, but returned to training last week.
He could potentially return to the squad this Wednesday, but that remains to be confirmed. Same for the young English winger, who should rejoin the Blues' squad this week, according to Liam Rosenior, but probably more for the match against Newcastle at the end of the week than in Paris as early as Wednesday. In any case, Estevao and Gittens will not start against PSG.
