Two days before the Strasbourg vs. Paris Saint-Germain match of the 20th Ligue 1 round this Sunday, it is already possible to predict the lineups.
Four days after its draw against Newcastle United, PSG is expected to field a necessarily reshuffled team, especially as a few returns are anticipated.
Forced into a draw on Wednesday night in the Champions League and now set to face Monaco in the playoffs, PSG returns to Ligue 1 on Sunday night with a tricky trip to Strasbourg to close the 20th round.
A match that could allow Luis Enrique's team to consolidate its position at the top of the championship, although PSG has a good chance of no longer being the leader by kickoff, since Lens hosts Le Havre on Friday night.
As is too often the case, PSG's last match produced another injured player, and it was Kvaratskhelia who joined the Parisian treatment room, but for only about 10 days. This Strasbourg vs. PSG match comes a bit too soon for him, so there is at least one place up for grabs in the attack.
In rather good form on Wednesday, Bradley Barcola should hold the left side, while Ousmane Dembele is highly likely to start again through the middle. That leaves the right flank, where Desire Doue is having a run of poor matches. Beware of a surprise regarding him, with the possible start for Ibrahim Mbaye.
Regarding the rest of PSG's lineup in Strasbourg, a real doubt exists over the goalkeeper position, as Luis Enrique himself did not rule out the idea of rotation. Lucas Chevalier could therefore return and start in place of Matvey Safonov, who started against the Magpies.
In front of him, Marquinhos could well be replaced by Ilya Zabarnyi in central defense, partnered with Willian Pacho, while rotation is less likely on the flanks. Achraf Hakimi might give his place to Warren Zaire-Emery, nonetheless.
In midfield, there are again four candidates for three positions, as Fabian Ruiz is expected to make his return after missing the matches at Auxerre and then against Newcastle due to the knock to his knee in Lisbon on Jan. 20.
As the holding midfielder, Vitinha should start again, while the right-sided midfield role will likely be between Joao Neves or Warren Zaire-Emery, although Senny Mayulu should not be ruled out; he played only three minutes on Wednesday and has started 68% of Ligue 1 matches this season.
PSG's predicted lineup vs. Strasbourg: Chevalier; Hakimi, Zabarnyi (or Marquinhos), Pacho, Nuno Mendes; Neves (or Zaire-Emery), Vitinha, Ruiz; Barcola (or Mbaye), Dembele, Doue.
On the Alsatian side, the winter has been eventful to say the least, with the departure of coach Liam Rosenior to Chelsea and the arrival of Gary O'Neil, which has been somewhat successful so far as he has won his first three matches, including the last one at Lille (4-1), all while deploying a 4-2-3-1 formation.
But he will be without what is probably his best player, Argentine midfielder Valentin Barco, for this big Sunday night fixture. To replace him, Abdoul Ouattara is the expected choice, partnered with Samir El Mourabet in the double pivot.
Regarding the rest of Strasbourg's probable lineup against PSG and given the few absences, we should see the duo of Ismael Doukoure and Africa Cup of Nations champion Mamadou Sarr in central defense in front of Mike Penders. On the flanks, Guela Doue is the favorite on the right and Ben Chilwell on the left.
In attack, there are slightly more doubts, but the two wingers should be Diego Moreira on the right and Martial Godo on the left, with Julio Enciso as the number 10. Up front, Joaquin Panichelli is the favorite to start, given that Emmanuel Emegha is just returning from injury and is even doubtful for this Strasbourg vs. PSG match, which will be his last before he departs for Chelsea next summer.
Strasbourg's predicted lineup vs. PSG: Penders; Doue, Doukoure, Sarr, Chilwell; El Mourabet, Ouattara; Diego Moreira, Enciso, Godo; Panichelli.
