3 Things To Learn From AFC Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool

AFC Bournemouth’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at the Vitality Stadium was another frustrating afternoon for Marco Rose’s side, who once again showed enough to suggest they could have taken something from the game, but ultimately came away empty-handed.

Alexander Isak’s second-half finish settled a tight contest, with Cody Gakpo creating the opening before the Swedish striker converted from close range.

For Bournemouth, however, the result highlighted three areas that need to improve.

Firstly, the biggest issue was Bournemouth’s inability to significantly change the game once the substitutes were introduced.

Marco Rose turned to David Brooks, Dan Jebbison, and Ben Gannon-Doak to change the game late on, but the changes did not provide the attacking spark Bournemouth needed in the final stages. That left Bournemouth chasing the game with very little time for their final attacking options to influence proceedings.

Against a Liverpool side with considerable quality across the pitch, Bournemouth needed fresh legs capable of immediately stretching the visitors. Instead, the attacking threat became increasingly predictable as the match went on.

Linked to that is the timing of Rose's changes.

There was a clear need for Bournemouth to inject more energy into the game after Isak's 57th-minute opener, particularly with Liverpool defending a narrow advantage. Yet the first wave of Bournemouth substitutions did not arrive until the 75th minute, with three changes made simultaneously. 

With Doak coming on with only a few minutes to go, it made it extremely difficult for the Scotsman to establish any rhythm.

Rose himself admitted afterwards that Bournemouth needed to be sharper in both boxes, while also acknowledging that the fine margins were once again costly.

To finish off, the most frustrating aspect was how sluggish Bournemouth looked for long periods. After the Europa League victory over Real Sociedad just three days earlier, there was always going to be a question over whether the Cherries could maintain the same intensity against Liverpool.

There were moments of quality, including chances that Bournemouth failed to take, but the overall attacking performance lacked the speed and sharpness required to punish Liverpool. The worrying part is that Liverpool were hardly at their best either. The visitors produced a relatively controlled performance, and needed just one decisive moment to take all three points.

Bournemouth end the first part of the season with a clear message: Against the Premier League's top sides, good spells are not enough. Cherries need greater attacking depth, earlier and more effective intervention from the bench, and considerably more energy if they are going to turn competitive performances into much needed points after this extended international break.
