AFC Bournemouth’s clash with AC Milan is more than just another European fixture. From John Bond’s inspiration for the Cherries’ famous red-and-black stripes to welcoming one of football’s biggest clubs to the south coast, this is a meeting steeped in history, identity and romance.

Red and Black: A Footballing Romance As Bournemouth Welcome AC MilanMore Videos

There are some football fixtures that just feel a little bit special. Not necessarily because of what's at stake, or even because of the quality on the pitch, but because of the story behind them. For AFC Bournemouth, a meeting with AC Milan has that feeling in spades. We're talking about one of the biggest clubs in the history of European football, and we're going to face them wearing our famous red-and-black stripes. Tell me that's not romantic.

Milan are, in my opinion, the biggest name Bournemouth will face in these early stages of the competition. Their history and European pedigree speak for themselves, and the chance to welcome a club of that stature to the south coast is something to savour. But it's the colours that make this fixture feel different.

Bournemouth's red and black were inspired by Milan back in the 1970s, when John Bond looked towards the Italian giants as a model for his own club. Jeff's excellent Roundtable piece with Kevin Bond tells that story far better than I could, and is well worth a read.

What I love is that a decision made all those years ago has created a connection that feels remarkably relevant today.

Because those stripes are ours now. They're part of our identity, our history and our sense of belonging. We don't pull on a Bournemouth shirt and think we're pretending to be Milan; we wear it because it's Bournemouth. Yet here we are, preparing to welcome the club that helped inspire our look, with the Cherries wearing those famous colours on our own pitch. There's something wonderfully unexpected about Milan coming to visit the team that wears their own stripes.

Of course, we don't share Milan's trophy cabinet or their European pedigree. But Bournemouth have a story worth telling, too. Our journey is unique, extraordinary and a source of immense pride for those who've followed this club through the highs, the lows and everything in between. We might not have Milan's continental history, but we've travelled a remarkable distance to reach this moment, and that journey deserves celebrating in its own right. The first night under the lights at Vitality Stadium against Sturm Graz was an everlasting memory in itself.

That's why I can't wait. There's the glamour of the opposition, the pride in our own identity and the sheer improbability of the whole thing. We spent years dreaming of how far this club might go; now we're experiencing moments beyond those wild dreams.

Milan helped inspire the stripes. Bournemouth made them their own.
