Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were all on the score sheet as Arsenal began their title defence with a win.
Five days after lifting the Community Shield, Arsenal carried that momentum straight into the Premier League with a controlled opening-night performance at the Emirates.
Havertz and Saka put Mikel Arteta’s side two goals ahead before half-time, with Odegaard adding a third shortly after the restart as newly promoted Coventry struggled to find a way back into the contest.
Mikel Arteta made two changes from the side that started against Manchester City.
Noni Madueke made way for Bukayo Saka whilst Bruno Guimaraes was absent from the squad after suffering a groin injury at Wembley, with Declan Rice assuming his starting role in midfield. Christos Tzolis kept his spot on the left, while Cristhian Mosquera continued alongside Gabriel Magalhaes at the heart of the defence.
Coventry made a lively start, forcing a corner inside the first minute, but it did not take long for Arsenal to settle and show why they are defending champions.
Tzolis looked sharp down the left, with Saka also showing early intent. The breakthrough arrived on 15 minutes. Milan van Ewijk hesitated near the corner flag, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to pounce and whip in a low cross that Kai Havertz swept home first time.
The Gunners doubled the lead just eight minutes later.
Rice surged forward and picked out Tzolis, whose low ball into the area was pushed away by Coventry’s Carl Rushworth into the path of Saka, who made no mistake in guiding the ball into the back of the net.
Saka pounced on poor goalkeeping to double Arsenal's lead [REUTERS]Coventry responded with a brighter spell after falling two behind, though they rarely threatened to carve out a clear chance. Gabriel needed treatment following a challenge from Ellis Simms but was able to continue.
Arsenal continued to look the more dangerous side and went in at half-time with a 2-0 lead, Havertz and Saka both on the scoresheet and Tzolis once again at the heart of their best attacking moments.
Odegaard Puts Arsenal Out of Sight
There were no changes from Arteta at half-time and the Gunners needed just four minutes to add the third.
Saka slipped Ben White in on the overlap, and the right-back’s cutback found Odegaard. The Arsenal captain’s finish was far from perfect, but it was enough to beat Rushworth and nestle into the bottom corner.
Myles Lewis-Skelly nearly made it four soon after, drawing a sharp save from Rushworth with a curling effort, while Tzolis kept causing headaches for Coventry down the left.
With the result never really in doubt, Arteta took the chance to rotate and manage his squad.
Declan Rice and Saka, both easing back in after late World Cup returns, made way after 69 minutes for Martin Zubimendi and Madueke.
Seven minutes later, Mikel Merino and Eberechi Eze came on for Odegaard and Tzolis. The Greek winger left the pitch to a warm ovation after another eye-catching display. Piero Hincapié was the final change, replacing Calafiori for the closing stages
Coventry kept battling but rarely troubled David Raya, and the Gunners saw out the final minutes with little fuss.
It was just about the perfect start for Arteta. Saka marked his return to the starting eleven with a goal, Havertz found the net for the second game running, and Tzolis carried his pre-season form into his league debut.
Most importantly, Arsenal’s title defence is up and running with three points on the board, before they head to Aston Villa for their first away test of the season
