Arsenal’s win against Liverpool at Anfield this evening is one for the record books as they prevent Liverpool having a shot on target first the time ever in the Premier League at Anfield.
For the first time in 14 years, the Gunners travelled to Liverpool and won at Anfield, sending them nine points clear of Andoni Iraola’s side.
It was another notorious defensive display from an Arsenal side that is quickly establishing themselves as one of the best defensive sides in Premier League history. This was epitomised as Liverpool, for the first time ever in Premier League history, failed to record a shot on target at home.
Liverpool had more possession than Arsenal (56%) and despite having seventeen shots in the game, not once was David Raya tested. Arsenal’s block after block, and a defensive shape that gave nothing clean, meant the home side’s work was to no avail.
The record lands on a team that has spent record amounts on their attack. With signings including Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Bradley Barcola, their overall outlay on just these attackers surpasses £350 million. This gives Arsenal all the more credit. To allow players with this quality and calibre not one opportunity to test Raya is testament to the immense work Mikel Arteta has done with his Arsenal team and just how good they are.
New signing Ezri Konsa has been key in this, covering in the absence of the injured William Saliba. The summer signing has slotted in seamlessly and looks like he’s been a part of the Arsenal team for years, not just a few months. Just in the game against Liverpool, Konsa won 100% of his ground duels, achieved the most defensive contributions (14) and won the most tackles (4). An incredible summer signing that to many is exceeding the expectations massively.
It’s another momentous day for Arteta’s Arsenal as they prove once again why they are the champions of England.
