Arsenal have signed Axel Donczew, Cardiff City’s youngest-ever player and a Wales youth international already tested in senior football.

Arsenal have completed the signing of 16-year-old winger Axel Donczew from Cardiff City, adding another highly regarded British prospect to their academy set-up.

The teenager has also signed a pre-contract agreement with the Gunners that will lead to him signing professional terms. Donczew attracted Arsenal’s attention during a breakthrough season in which he progressed from Cardiff’s youth sides into the senior squad.

Donczew arrives as a long-term academy addition rather than a player expected to move immediately into Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans. He has, however, already experienced senior football at an unusually young age.

The Wales youth international became the youngest player to represent Cardiff when he made his debut against Newport County in the EFL Trophy in October 2025.

Donczew was 15 when he replaced Robert Tankiewicz during the second half at Cardiff City Stadium. Tankiewicz had broken the club’s previous record earlier in the same game, before Donczew lowered it again after coming from the bench.

He made a second senior appearance in the EFL Trophy against AFC Wimbledon. While his minutes with the first team were limited, the fact he was trusted in senior competition at all spoke volumes about how highly he was rated inside Cardiff’s academy.

Donczew has mainly played out wide, but he’s comfortable drifting into central attacking roles too. He’s known for his direct running, picking up the ball between defenders and driving towards goal.

His progress didn’t go unnoticed. Donczew shared Cardiff’s Academy Player of the Season award with Tankiewicz, with the club praising both for their standout performances in youth football and their steps up to the senior squad.

Internationally, Donczew has already played above his age group, first turning out for Wales Under-17s before stepping up to the Under-18s, finding the net against Portugal and Liechtenstein in European Championship qualifiers.

This signing brings a top prospect to join the Gunners' Hale End setup, having missed out on the likes of Jeremy Monga earlier this summer.

Ethan Nwaneri, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Max Dowman have all recently shown what’s possible for young players at Arsenal. For Donczew, though, the first step will be making his mark in the academy before thinking about the senior squad.

Those early first-team minutes should stand him in good stead. Donczew is used to playing above his age group and has already faced the pace and physicality of senior football.

Arsenal are getting a player still at the start of his journey, but one who leaves Cardiff with a club record, senior experience and a reputation as one of their brightest academy prospects.

Now comes the challenge of settling into a new environment and fighting for a place in a Hale End set-up packed with attacking talent.
