Mikel Arteta said Arsenal have a major opportunity to reach the Champions League semi-finals as he explained his selection decisions and backed Declan Rice’s fitness before Sporting CP.
Mikel Arteta stressed the scale of Arsenal’s opportunity before kick-off against Sporting CP, with the manager framing Wednesday’s second leg as a chance to move one step closer to making club history in Europe.
Speaking to TNT Sports ahead of the game, Arteta made clear that the stakes alone should be enough to drive his players on as Arsenal look to protect the 1-0 lead they earned in Lisbon last week.
“We’re talking about the possibility to be in the semi-finals of the Champions League, so it doesn't get much better than that,” Arteta said. “We know the opportunity that we have ahead, so we're excited for the game.”
Those comments came after a difficult few days for Arsenal following the home defeat to Bournemouth, but Arteta’s message before facing Sporting was that the response did not need to be complicated. Instead, he pointed to two key areas, both of them practical rather than emotional.
“First of all, more efficient in both boxes than we were [against AFC Bournemouth], and especially a lot of the things that we've done so well for nine months, repeat them here and we'll be fine.”
That was a pointed reference to the balance Arsenal have generally shown across the season. Arteta’s side have built their campaign on control, structure and consistency, and his view appeared to be that the Bournemouth result was more about a drop in execution than the need for any major rethink.
Arteta was also asked about the changes to his starting line-up, with the Arsenal manager emphasising the value of depth at this stage of the season. Rather than focusing only on the players selected from the start, he underlined the importance of the squad as a whole and the role substitutes could still play later in the night.
“Everybody’s been really important, different qualities, characteristics, freshness as well, because we've played so many games as well,” he said. “So that's the team to start, and then we have the finishers - we know the impact that they had all season.”
One of the biggest pre-match talking points had been Declan Rice, who was a doubt in the build-up but was named in the starting XI. Arteta’s explanation was simple and direct, using Rice’s inclusion as an example of the mood inside the squad before such a high-stakes game.
“That's Declan. All the boys are desperate to play in these kind of scenarios, they didn't want to miss it and he's fit and available.”
Taken together, Arteta’s pre-match comments set a clear tone. Arsenal’s manager did not downplay the pressure, but he made it clear the focus was on the scale of the opportunity, the need for a sharper performance than the one against Bournemouth, and the belief that his squad still has the depth to handle a decisive European night.
