The latest before Arsenal travel to Bayern Munich in their UEFA Champions League clash on Wednesday afternoon.
Arsenal travel to the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, looking to make it three wins from three in this season’s Champions League league phase.
The Gunners beat Napoli 1-0 and Lille 3-0 in their opening two European fixtures, and remain the only side yet to concede in the competition. They head to Germany on the back of three straight wins in all competitions, after Noni Madueke’s deflected 80th-minute strike secured a tight victory at Nottingham Forest on Sunday. However, Munich has proved a miserable venue for Arsenal, with the club losing on each of their last three visits and winning there just once, a 2-0 last-16 victory in 2013 with Mikel Arteta as captain.
Bayern Munich remain unbeaten in all competitions this season under Vincent Kompany, and have scored 25 goals in their last six games. The Bavarians are also unbeaten in 39 Champions League group stage and league phase matches at home, a run stretching back to December 2013.
Bayern welcome Arsenal on the back of a 6-1 thrashing of RB Leipzig last weekend, though they dropped points in a chaotic 3-3 draw away at Viking FK in their last run-out in Europe.
Arsenal Team News
Piero Hincapié will miss the trip with the ankle injury he picked up in a post-match warm-down after the win over Leeds United. However, Arteta revealed the Ecuadorian could be available for Sunday’s Premier League clash with Everton if he is able to train over the coming days.
Martin Zubimendi, who was injured in the same session, has been passed fit and will be involved after returning to the bench at the City Ground.
Christos Tzolis remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, whilst William Saliba is still out as he continues his recovery from a back problem. Madueke is expected to start on the left after replacing Eberechi Eze at half-time on Sunday.
Bayern Munich Team News
Michael Olise is suspended after being sent off against Viking last week, a major blow given he has 14 goal involvements in just ten games this season. Teenager Lennart Karl, who scored against Arteta's side last campaign, is expected to deputise, while Jamal Musiala is also out with a thigh injury.
Joshua Kimmich has been confirmed to be unavailable after missing training on Tuesday for personal reasons. Manuel Neuer, however, returned to training after sitting out the Leipzig win with a foot problem and is expected to start.
Harry Kane, who has scored 15 goals in 22 games against Arsenal, will lead the line, though the England captain has failed to score in his last two meetings with the Gunners.
What The Managers Say
Speaking ahead of the game, Arteta made no secret of his excitement at facing one of Europe’s elite. He said, “This is the stage, this is the kind of team, this is the kind of coach, this is the kind of club, the stadium that you want to be involved in.”
The Arsenal boss also delivered a welcome update on his squad, adding, “Zubi’s back with us, he will be involved tomorrow. Piero, let’s see. If he’s able to train the next few days he can be available for Everton, which is great news.”
Kompany, meanwhile, missed Bayern’s pre-match press conference after contracting a viral infection, with assistant Aaron Danks speaking in his place. Danks said, "The key will be decided on small margins. We have to be prepared for every aspect of the game. We trust the process and the work we have done with the players in the last couple of seasons. We want them to play fearless and express themselves."
Danks also confirmed that he is ready to take charge in the dugout, should Kompany be unable to be in attendance of the clash.
Referees
Davide Massa will take charge of the match at the Allianz Arena, marking his eighth game of the season. The Italian official also oversaw England's defeat to Spain in their UEFA Nations League opener.
He takes charge of Arteta's side exactly one year on from Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing of Atlético Madrid at the Emirates Stadium in last season’s league phase. Massa has overseen five Arsenal matches in his career, all in European competition, with the Gunners winning four of them without conceding a single goal, including a 3-0 win over Monaco in December 2024 and comfortable away victories at Eintracht Frankfurt and Qarabağ in the Europa League.
His only Arsenal defeat, however, is one supporters will remember well. Massa was in charge when Olympiacos stunned the Emirates in February 2020, with Youssef El-Arabi’s late extra-time goal sending Arteta’s side out of the Europa League on away goals in the Spaniard’s first season. Across those five games, Massa has shown seven yellow cards to Arsenal players and is yet to send off a Gunner or award a penalty against them.
