Fabio Vieira is heading back to Hamburg for good, the move finally confirmed after a summer of back-and-forth negotiations that followed his impressive loan stint in the Bundesliga.
Fabio Vieira’s time at Arsenal is over, with the Portuguese midfielder sealing a permanent switch to Hamburger SV, bringing a close to his chapter in North London. Returning to the club where he spent last season on loan, having made no secret of his desire to stay in Hamburg throughout the summer.
When the window opened, a permanent deal looked anything but straightforward.
Hamburg were keen to bring Vieira back after he established himself as a key figure under Merlin Polzin, but they let the purchase option in his loan deal lapse. The clause, said to be worth around €22million, was simply too steep for the Bundesliga side.
What followed was a drawn-out summer of negotiations. Both clubs wanted the deal, but agreeing on a price proved far trickier, with the final fee set at £7.7 million.
Hamburg Never Hid Their Desire to Bring Vieira Back
A year in Germany gave Vieira’s career a much-needed lift after things had stalled at Arsenal.
He had already spent 2024/25 back at Porto on loan before joining Hamburg on deadline day last summer, and it didn’t take long for him to become one of Polzin’s go-to attacking options.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing. Vieira picked up two red cards early on, but he bounced back to finish the season with seven goals and five assists in 29 Bundesliga games, helping Hamburg stay up.
By the time the season ended, Hamburg were already plotting how to keep him for good.
Their position became public in July when board member Eric Huwer confirmed that the club had submitted figures to the Gunners.
"We've fallen a little in love with Fabio. We're fighting for him every day," Huwer said at the time.
"We've given Arsenal the numbers. They're just not budging yet."
That pretty much summed up the stalemate.
Hamburg felt they could put together a tempting offer, but they weren’t about to break the bank. Arsenal, for their part, saw little reason to accept a cut-price deal so soon after negotiating the original purchase clause.
Arsenal and Hamburg Remained Apart on Valuation
Talks dragged on through July, but neither side could find a breakthrough.
Hamburg still viewed Vieira as a priority throughout the summer and believed it was the right place for him to continue his career. Arsenal, however, were reportedly looking for around €18million at that stage, which Hamburg weren’t willing to meet.
With the gap still wide, Vieira headed back to the Gunners, making four appearances through pre-season, but at no point did it really look like Vieira would be amongst the squad for the new season.
He’d already spent the last two seasons away from North London and was heading into the final year of his Arsenal contract.
It made for an unusual standoff. Arsenal seemed to wait for a better offer, but with the end of the window just days away, there was little sense in holding onto a player that would see very limited appearances, if any at all.
Late Hamburg Push Finally Breaks Deadlock
Hamburg ramped up their efforts as the window entered its final week.
Sporting director Claus Costa is believed to have flown to London for face-to-face talks, meeting both Vieira and Arsenal’s Andrea Berta as Hamburg tried to close the gap once and for all.

Vieira joined from Porto in the summer of 2022, arriving with a growing reputation after catching Arsenal's eye during his come up at Porto.
There were glimpses of the creativity the Gunners had hoped for, but he never managed to nail down a regular spot in Mikel Arteta’s starting eleven. As a result, then spending two of his four years at the club on loan.
Injuries played their part, and competition in Arsenal’s midfield only grew as the squad evolved.
He leaves the Gunners having made 49 appearances across all competitions, with three goals and 10 assists to his name, his last two seasons spent out on loan.
It was his year at Hamburg that finally paved the way for a permanent exit.
Hamburg saw enough during his loan to spend most of the summer pushing for his return. Vieira’s own desire to go back kept talks alive, even when the two clubs seemed miles apart.
It took until the final days of the window to bridge the gap, but Vieira finally gets the move he wanted and Arsenal can move on from a transfer saga that’s dragged on all summer.
