Kai Havertz will leave the Germany camp early after tests confirmed the Arsenal forward suffered a muscle strain against the Netherlands.
Germany have confirmed Kai Havertz suffered a muscle strain during Thursday night's 1-1 draw with the Netherlands and will now leave the national-team camp early.
The Arsenal forward lasted just 30 minutes in Amsterdam before being replaced by Younes Ebnoutalib, with Jürgen Klopp revealing after the game that Havertz and Jamal Musiala had both suffered muscular problems.
Further examinations carried out on Thursday evening have now given Germany a clearer answer.
In an update released on Friday morning, the DFB confirmed Havertz had sustained a muscle strain and would leave the camp following the squad's return from Amsterdam. Musiala, who was injured during the warm-up and never made it into the starting XI, was diagnosed with a torn muscle fibre in his right thigh.
There was no recovery period attached to Havertz's injury. With two weeks until Premier League football returns, it leaves Arsenal waiting to discover whether the problem will extend beyond the international break, with Germany clear he can’t continue in the squad for their next fixture. Klopp's side face Greece in Augsburg on Sunday before continuing their Nations League schedule against Serbia next week.
Klopp couldn't provide a diagnosis immediately after the Netherlands game, when both players were still being assessed.
“Both are muscular injuries,” Klopp said.
“They're both having MRIs. I hope it's nothing serious and the boys are available again relatively quickly. They'll probably be out for Sunday's game.”
Havertz had started through the middle in Klopp's first match as Germany head coach, with Kevin Schade and Karim Adeyemi also used in the attacking line. The Arsenal forward struggled after a foul before withdrawing shortly after.
Jonathan Burkardt and Florian Wirtz will join the squad earlier than originally scheduled and could be available against Greece on Sunday. Both were initially due to arrive with Klopp's second group of players for the next two Nations League fixtures.
For the Gunners, the diagnosis provides more information but still doesn’t answer the main question on every fans lips.
Havertz has started all of Arsenal’s Premier League games this season and looked to be the clear first-choice striker for the Gunners. The German international has scored twice through their opening five fixtures, playing almost every minute across his league appearances.
Arsenal are not back in Premier League action until Leeds United visit the Emirates on October 10, leaving more than two weeks between his injury and Mikel Arteta's next league selection.
The next update from the club or country should give a clearer indication of how long the striker will miss due to injury and his recovery timeline.
