Marli Salmon has signed his first professional Arsenal contract on his 17th birthday after progressing through the academy and making his senior debut last season.
Marli Salmon has put pen to paper on his first professional deal with Arsenal, another milestone in a journey that started seven years ago when he first joined the club’s academy.
The defender signed on his 17th birthday, fresh from a breakthrough 2025/26 season that saw him edge ever closer to Mikel Arteta’s first-team plans.
Salmon arrived at Arsenal as an under-11 in 2019, starting out further up the pitch before gradually finding his feet as a defender.
His progress picked up pace last season. After catching the eye at academy level, Salmon earned several call-ups to Arteta’s senior squad and made his professional debut away to Club Brugge in Belgium.
He came on for Ben White in the 83rd minute, getting his first real taste of senior football before even signing professional terms.
Now, having made regular appearances throughout the Gunners' pre-season, his long-term future at Arsenal looks even more secure.
“It means a lot to me,” Salmon said in Arsenal’s announcement after signing.
“A lot of hard work went into this, a lot of ups and downs, but I’m so proud.”
Salmon’s Arsenal Journey Started in Attack
Salmon’s development has been anything but straightforward for the youngster.
He first arrived at Hale End as an attacker, only to see his role shift dramatically as he moved up through the age groups.
That attacking background has shaped him into a defender who is comfortable on the ball and physically up to the demands of the back line.
Salmon admits there have been tough spells along the way, but he sees those challenges as key to his growth.
“It sounds kind of cliched but it’s a lot of ups and downs, a lot of tough times,” he said.
“Sometimes you really go through adversity, but it’s built me to the person I am today, so I’m thankful for it.”
His family have played a major part in his journey, with Salmon seeing this contract as much a reward for their support as for his own efforts.
The next challenge is to turn academy promise into regular minutes with the senior side.
First-Team Experience Gives Salmon Something to Build On
Salmon has already had a glimpse of what it takes at the top level.
Training and travelling with Arsenal’s senior squad last season gave him a first-hand look at the preparation and standards expected in a team chasing the biggest prizes.
His debut against Club Brugge was a clear milestone, but the time spent around Arteta’s squad may have been just as valuable.
He spoke about picking up lessons from how Arsenal’s senior players prepare and carry themselves off the pitch, something most academy players only see once they start making the step up.
He was part of the group during the run-in to Arsenal’s Premier League title win.
That gave him a front-row seat to the consistency needed across a whole season, not just the celebrations at the end.
“Being around that was amazing,” Salmon said.
“You see so many one-percents that go into it.”
For a player just starting out at senior level, those experiences offer a valuable reference point for what lies ahead.
Salmon won’t be rushed just because he’s signed professional terms. Arsenal are likely to keep developing him in the academy, giving him chances with Arteta’s squad as and when they come.
The immediate goal is to keep progressing, although making regular first team appearances will be a tough ask given the talent he is competing with.
His position means there’s plenty to pick up from the senior defenders already at the club, three of which made the PFA Premier League Team of the Year following their efforts during Arsenal's title win.
In seven years, Salmon has gone from under-11 attacker to making his Arsenal debut as a defender.
His first professional contract means the next chapter of his development has been secured to remain in North London.
