Max Dowman Red Card Appeal Is Rejected
Oct 29, 2026 6:26 PM

Arsenal's appeal against Max Dowman's red card against Fleetwood Town during the week has been rejected meaning the teenager will miss the next three Premier League games due to suspension.

Arsenal have lost their appeal against Max Dowman’s red card against Fleetwood Town, with the teenager now set to serve a three match suspension. The decision means he will miss the next three Premier League fixtures against Liverpool, Hull City and Newcastle United.

The Football Association confirmed on Thursday that an independent Regulatory Commission had rejected Arsenal’s claims of both wrongful dismissal and excessive punishment. The club had challenged the decision to send off Dowman during Tuesday’s Carabao Cup defeat against Fleetwood Town.

Dowman was dismissed after an incident involving Fleetwood midfielder Harrison Neal during Arsenal’s third round tie. The 16-year-old appeared to kick out at Neal following a reckless challenge by the Englishman. The referee felt he had no choice but to send Dowman off.

Arsenal’s Carabao Cup campaign also ended in disappointment on Tuesday night. The match finished 1-1 before Fleetwood won the penalty shootout 5-3, knocking Mikel Arteta’s side out of the competition. A wait for a league cup goes on as Arsenal still haven't lifted that particular trophy since 1993.

This was the first straight red card that the Gunners have received in over 600 days with the last coming for another Hale End graduate. Myles Lewis-Skelly received a red during Arsenal's 1-0 home defeat to West Ham during the 2024/2025 season.

Arsenal had hoped to overturn the decision, but the appeal’s rejection means the youngster will now be unavailable for three Premier League games. His suspension begins with Sunday’s meeting with Liverpool at Anfield which promises to be a huge game in this season’s title race. He will then miss Arsenal’s home fixture against Hull City the following week and the first game back after the November international break against Newcastle United at St James' Park.

The decision is an unfortunate setback for Dowman. With Bukayo Saka and Christos Tzolis both being out with injuries, these next few games felt like the perfect opportunity for the teenager to feature more heavily for the Gunners. This leaves Arsenal with just two wingers available for the trip to Anfield, those being Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze. Dowman’s suspension is only eligible for domestic games so the teenager will still be able to feature against Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League next Wednesday.

For now, Arsenal will have to deal with the situation and move forward. A win against Liverpool on Sunday will completely flip the low feeling within the club at the moment.
