Bayern Munich forward Michael Olise will miss next week’s Champions League meeting with Arsenal after he was sent off at Viking on Tuesday night.
Michael Olise will miss Bayern Munich’s Champions League clash with Arsenal next week after being sent off in Tuesday’s 3-3 draw at Viking.
The Frenchman was dismissed in the 73rd minute in Stavanger, with Bayern holding a 3-2 lead at the time. After receiving a caution for pulling Henrik Heggheim's shirt, he recieved a second yellow card for throwing the ball at the face of Viking captain Zlatko Tripić.
It was the first red card of his professional career, and it proved costly as Viking took advantage of the extra man as substitute Herman Haugen scored in the final minute to earn the Norwegian champions a shock draw.
Bayern had fought back from two goals down to lead, thanks to a brace from former Tottenham Hotspur stiker Harry Kane and a goal from Luis Díaz.
Bayern head coach Vincent Kompany did not hold back in his assessment after the match. He told reporters the result was the team’s own fault, adding that 'this red card was super dumb'. Kompany went on to reveal that Olise had apologised and admitted he had let his teammates down.
Director of sport Max Eberl was equally critical. Speaking after the game, he said Bayern had got themselves into trouble early on before being left a man down with a 'stupid yellow-red card', and agreed that the referee’s decision was the right one.
The suspension is a major blow for Kompany’s side ahead of one of the biggest fixtures of the league phase. Olise will now miss the meeting with Arsenal on 21 October, which takes place in Munich.
The winger has been one of Bayern’s standout performers this season, contributing to seventeen goals in just fourteen matches across all competitions.
His absence removes one of Bayern’s most dangerous attackers for the visit of the Premier League champions, who arrive in Germany in strong form after failing to win just one match this campaign.
The pair also met in the league phase last campaign, when goals from Jurriën Timber, Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli saw Arsenal run out 3-1 winners at the Emirates.
Two seasons earlier, the Gunners drew 2-2 in the first leg of their quarter-final clash, when they were denied a late penalty, before Joshua Kimmich headed the only goal of the second leg at the Allianz Arena to knock Arteta’s side out.
Arsenal made it two wins from two in the league phase with a 3-0 victory over Lille on Tuesday night, extending their record unbeaten run in the Champions League league phase to 14 matches.
Mikel Arteta’s side travel to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League on Sunday before heading to Munich.
