Mikel Arteta has provided an update on Bukayo Saka, Jurrien Timber and Riccardo Calafiori ahead of Arsenal’s clash with Newcastle.
Mikel Arteta has confirmed Bukayo Saka is set to return to Arsenal’s matchday squad against Newcastle, providing a timely boost ahead of a crucial Premier League fixture at the Emirates.
Saka has not played since the Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City because of an Achilles issue, but he is now poised to be involved again as Arsenal look to respond in the title race. Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Arteta said: “Bukayo is probably going to be in the squad, so good news.”
The update comes at an important time for Arsenal. Manchester City’s win over Burnley moved them above Arteta’s side, with the two clubs now locked on points and goal difference heading into the final five league matches. Arsenal, therefore, go into the Newcastle game needing a win to return to the top, while City are in FA Cup semi-final action.
Arteta also suggested Saka is in a positive frame of mind after working his way back towards availability. “He was in great spirits today; you could see that,” he said.
Saka’s return gives Arsenal another major attacking option after a difficult recent run. Since the international break, the Gunners have struggled for rhythm and have had to manage several injury issues while also competing in the Champions League. His involvement against Newcastle may still need to be handled carefully, but simply having him back in the squad is a significant step.
There was also good news on Riccardo Calafiori. The defender has been out since the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Sporting CP, missing the return leg and recent Premier League matches against Bournemouth and Manchester City. Arteta confirmed: “Riccardo [is] in the squad.”
However, Jurrien Timber remains unavailable. The Dutch defender has been out since the win over Everton in March, when he came off before half-time with a groin issue after also taking a blow to the ankle. The Newcastle match comes too soon for him, meaning Arsenal are still not at full strength despite the returns of Saka and Calafiori.
The overall picture is still mixed, but improved. Saka and Calafiori are back in contention, Timber remains out, and Arteta’s squad is beginning to regain options at a point when every selection decision carries extra weight. For Arsenal, the timing matters. Newcastle is now a must-win fixture in the title race, and the return of two senior players gives Arteta more flexibility before one of the biggest weeks of the season.
