Arsenal head to Lisbon for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final against an in-form Sporting CP side, with Gabriel Magalhaes a major doubt after the Southampton defeat and the hosts insisting they “fear none”.

Arsenal’s season shifts back to Europe on Tuesday night when Mikel Arteta’s side face Sporting CP in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in Lisbon. It is a tie that arrives at an awkward moment for Arsenal after the FA Cup defeat at Southampton, but also one that offers a chance to reset quickly on the biggest stage. Sporting, meanwhile, come into the match with belief, momentum and no shortage of confidence.

Road to the quarter-finals

Arsenal reached the last eight after coming through the league phase unbeatean before seeing off Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16. Their European campaign has included convincing wins and the kind of control Arteta has wanted from his side in this competition, with the home second leg against Leverkusen finishing the job after leaving Germany equal.

Sporting’s route has been far more dramatic. They secured direct qualification from the league phase and then produced one of the standout comebacks of the knockout round, overturning a three-goal first-leg deficit against Bodo/Glimt to reach the quarter-finals. That comeback alone tells Arsenal plenty about the mentality of Sporting and the challenge waiting for them in Lisbon.

Form

This quarter-final arrives at an important moment for Arsenal psychologically as well as tactically. The defeat to Southampton was damaging in its own right, but it also came after their Carabao Cup exit, meaning Arteta’s side have now suffered two domestic cup setbacks in close succession. The international break sat between those two defeats, but it has not removed the sense that Arsenal now head to Lisbon needing a response. Arteta’s message after Southampton reflected that reality. “Now is the moment,” he said. “So, stand up, make yourself accountable and deliver like we’ve been doing all season.” In that sense, this first leg is not just about the Champions League. It is also about how Arsenal react to a difficult spell.

Team news

Arsenal’s biggest concern is Gabriel after the centre-back was forced off against Southampton. Arteta could offer little encouragement afterwards, saying: “I think he felt something. I don’t know exactly what it is. We’re going to have to assess him, but obviously when a player is asking to be substituted, it’s never good news.” That leaves Arsenal sweating over the fitness of one of their most important defenders ahead of the first leg.

The concern around Gabriel comes on top of a squad that was already stretched at St Mary’s. Jurrien Timber, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, Leandro Trossard and Piero Hincapie were all absent from the Southampton game, while William Saliba, Martin Zubimendi and Noni Madueke all played as substitutes, having also been carrying doubts into the match. Some of those names may yet return to contention, but the broader picture is that Arsenal head into the quarter-final still managing a long list of fitness issues at a stage of the season when rotation becomes harder and the margin for error smaller.

Arteta made clear after the FA Cup exit that he would not use injuries as an excuse, saying: “I don’t want to put any excuses about the players that are missing or the players that are here with issues.” Even so, availability continues to be a major part of the story before the trip to Lisbon. If Gabriel were to miss out as well, Arsenal would travel to Portugal with fresh uncertainty at the back and with several other key players still fighting to prove their fitness in time.

Mood in Both Camps

Sporting have not tried to play down the occasion. Luis Suarez said they “fear none”, while Geny Catamo also spoke confidently about facing Arsenal, making it clear the Portuguese side believe they can hurt one of Europe’s bigger names.

Arsenal, meanwhile, go into the tie on the back of two domestic cup disappointments, with the international break sitting between their Carabao Cup exit and the FA Cup defeat at Southampton. That gives the first leg an extra edge. Sporting are attacking it with confidence. Arsenal head into it needing a response.
