Viktor Gyokeres has scored in a seventh consecutive Nations League game, extending the competition record he set for Sweden against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Viktor Gyokeres has extended his Nations League scoring record to seven consecutive games after putting Sweden ahead against Romania on Monday night.
The Arsenal striker scored the only goal in Sweden’s 1-0 win over Romania in Bucharest, continuing a run which had already taken him beyond every other player in the history of the competition.
Gyokeres only set the record three days earlier.
His second-half goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Friday made him the first player to score in six successive Nations League matches, moving him clear of Aleksandar Mitrovic and Benjamin Sesko, who had both previously managed five. Sweden eventually drew 1-1 in Zenica, but Gyokeres arrived in Romania with the chance to add to a record which was already his.
Sweden began the evening top of their League B group after taking seven points from their opening three matches, while Romania were still looking for their first point of the campaign. Gyokeres’ early goal gave Graham Potter’s side another strong start and made it four goals in four Nations League appearances for the Arsenal forward this season.
Gyokeres’ tally began in 2024, scoring in Sweden’s 3-0 win away to Estonia before finding the net against Slovakia the following month. He then produced one of the standout performances of the entire 2024/25 Nations League campaign, scoring four times in a 6-0 victory over Azerbaijan.
Those goals helped him finish that edition as the competition’s leading scorer with nine goals.
Almost two years later, his run resumed immediately when Sweden began their latest Nations League campaign. Gyokeres scored the winner in the first meeting with Romania on September 25, added another in the 3-1 victory over Poland and then struck in Bosnia to claim the outright record.
The seven-game sequence has now brought Gyokeres 10 goals, with his four against Azerbaijan accounting for almost half of that total. The Arsenal forward has been productive across the competition as a whole, scoring 14 times in 15 appearances across his Nations League career.
It has been a productive international break for Gyokeres despite Sweden dealing with injuries and illness across the camp. Alexander Isak was unavailable for the latter part of it, leaving the Arsenal striker to lead the line against Bosnia and Romania.
The 28-year-old will return to North London having scored in all four of Sweden’s Nations League games this season, a sharp contrast to his start at club level.
Gyokeres is still waiting for his first Arsenal goal of the campaign, though the striker has managed just 190 minutes across all competitions for the Gunners. His latest international spell has at least given him a run of form before Premier League football resumes.
The Gunners are back in action against Leeds United at the Emirates on Saturday, with Gyokeres due to rejoin the squad after completing Sweden’s October fixtures. With an exact return date for Havertz unknown, it could see the Swedish striker assume a starting role at the Emirates.
