A shocking 3-0 thumping by Brighton halted the Gunners’ perfect start. Examine whether this defensive collapse signals a genuine crisis or a temporary blip for Arteta’s champions.
Arsenal and Mikel Arteta have gone into the 3 week extended International Break in the worst way possible, after being handed a 3-0 thumping by Fabian Hurzelers Brighton & Hove Albion but is it really a cause for concern from The Gunners or just a ‘bump in the road?’
The defending Premier League champions entered into the 2026/27 in fine form, registering a convincing 3-0 at the hands of newcomers Coventry City before registering a hard fought 0-1 victory at Villa Park in gameweek 2. This was then followed by a 2-1 victory against Chelsea at Emirates Stadium and then a 0-2 victory at the Stadium of Light against an extremely stubborn and tough to play against Sunderland side.
Coupled up with a 0-1 victory against Napoli in Naples to kickstart the Champions League campaign and a 2-4 victory in the Carabao Cup 3rd Round against Ipswich Town. Before the disappointing defeat on Saturday, Arsenal had played 6, won 6, scored 13 goals and conceded just 3.
Naturally, coming into the game at The American Express Stadium, Arsenal would have backed themselves to get all 3 points, especially coming into the game in the type of form that they had shown previously, but we must not forget that Brighton had been showing signs of similar form. Many sides are going to struggle going there and getting results. Hurzeler has got them playing some brilliant, high press football that many teams will struggle coming up against. I think for most Arsenal fans including myself, it was the manner of the defeat that worried fans.
We have not seen an Arsenal performance in which the backline was so disjointed and the attack so devoid of ideas in a long, long time. Arsenal haven’t lost by a 3 goal margin since May 2023, where the very same opponents, Brighton & Hove Albion dismantled The Gunners at Emirates Stadium. I also think the fact that it was the first time that we have seen Arsenal’s ‘best available’ team on paper all come together and start in the same XI. For them to then fall to a defeat of this nature really shocked fans.
So where does the club go from here? Maybe the international break has come at a good time for the squad to go off to their national sides (or stay and continue training with Arsenal), then regroup and go again in October. I really don’t think there is any cause for concern and I certainly don’t think that this is the start of a trend we are going to see. Sides are allowed off days, it’s naturally going to happen in a season that is so long and packed with a vast number of football games, but it is about how they react when the season starts up again. Arteta will no doubt, be analysing this defeat for weeks, will work out the issues and will have rectified them before the squad even returns.
That is the type of manager he is and we as fans should have full confidence that things will be rectified. I think some perspective also has to be brought into the conversation. Brighton are a very good footballing side, especially at home. Teams are allowed to play well and although it is frustrating, there is no doubt teams will play badly at points. If anything, we should count ourselves lucky that a defeat like this has come in Gameweek 5 and not Gameweek 25. Arsenal had 10 points at this same stage of the season last year and went on to win their first Premier league title in 22 years.
The Gunners have 12 in their first 5 games to start this season, a better differential of +2. Personally, I think we are doing just fine. The football season is a long, long rollercoaster of changing emotions and I think as Arsenal fans, we should be one of the most qualified clubs to know that.

Once the international break concludes, The Gunners welcome Leeds United to Emirates Stadium on October 10th, before a game against Lille in the Champions League coming 3 days later, again at Emirates Stadium. This is then followed by a trip to Nottingham Forest on the following Sunday. A good chance with two home fixtures especially for the squad to get back on track and put another formidable run together as we head towards a jam packed festive footballing period!
So, is there really cause for concern for Arsenal after their 3-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion or is it just a bump in the road. For me, 100% a bump in the road and I have no doubt you will see a reaction from the squad and that starts against Leeds United.
