The Gunners face a defensive crisis after the versatile defender hobbled off at West Ham, forcing Mikel Arteta into a high-stakes tactical gamble amidst a tightening title race.

Arsenal suffered a significant injury concern during their Premier League clash with West Ham as Ben White was forced off in the first half after appearing to hurt his knee in a 50-50 challenge. The defender needed treatment after a block tackle with Crysencio Summerville and was replaced by Martin Zubimendi in the 28th minute, with Declan Rice moved to right-back in a reshuffle that underlined Arsenal’s shortage in the position.

White had started at right-back as Arsenal named an unchanged side from their Champions League semi-final win over Atletico Madrid. But the England defender went down holding his knee after a challenge he did not appear to fully commit to, leaving Arteta with an immediate problem on a day when Arsenal where Arsenal are looking to protect their place at the top of the Premier League.

Rice asked to solve right-back problem

Arteta’s response was a bold one. Rather than turn directly to Cristhian Mosquera, who was named among the substitutes, Arsenal introduced Zubimendi and shifted Rice across to right-back. The Spain midfielder moved into the central area vacated by Rice, allowing Arsenal to keep a familiar midfield balance while asking one of their most influential players to cover an emergency defensive role.

It was a striking call due to Declan Rice's impact in midfield since joining the Gunners. Cristhian Mosquera has previously filled in at right-back this season when called up, so Arteta must have a strong reason behind the decision.

Timber absence deepens concern

White’s injury comes with Jurrien Timber already unavailable. Arteta confirmed before the West Ham match that Timber and Mikel Merino had “no chance” of being fit for the weekend, with the Arsenal manager adding that there was “still a fair bit to do” before either player could return.

Speaking ahead of the game, Arteta also admitted Timber’s recovery had been difficult to manage because the injury had lasted longer than expected. “We didn’t expect it to take so long,” he said, adding that Timber was “not fit to play.”

That leaves Arsenal facing renewed uncertainty at right-back at a demanding stage of the campaign. White’s durability and tactical intelligence have been important to Arteta’s defensive structure, particularly in games where Arsenal need their full-backs to support attacks while still controlling transitions.

Arsenal will now wait for a clearer medical assessment on White. Until then, Arteta’s immediate concern is finding a stable solution on the right side of defence, with the Premier League title race entering its final stretch and little room for further disruption.
