Ian Maatsen was one of Aston Villa's standout performers against Fulham, and after a difficult period for Villa at left-back, the Dutchman's improving fitness and attacking influence offer plenty of encouragement.

I thought Ian Maatsen was Aston Villa's best outfield player against Fulham, and while there weren't too many positives to take from the second-half performance, his individual display was another encouraging indication that he's beginning to establish himself as our first-choice left-back.

It's a position that has caused Villa problems at various stages of the season, particularly with injuries and the changes we've had to make defensively, but the improvement in Maatsen over the last couple of games has been noticeable, and I think we're starting to see the benefits of him getting regular football again.

There were moments against Fulham, particularly in the first half, when Villa played some excellent passes into the left channel and I was convinced the ball was going to run out of play, only for Maatsen to get there and keep the attack alive.

His acceleration and ability to cover ground are important qualities in this Villa team, particularly when we're trying to stretch opponents who are defending with plenty of players behind the ball, but I was equally impressed by the positions he was taking up and the way he was using possession.

He was one of the few Villa players who continued to offer an attacking threat in the second half, even when Fulham had taken control of the game and we were struggling to create anything meaningful.

Towards the end, when Garnacho had been introduced, Maatsen actually started taking up some really intelligent positions in central areas rather than simply staying wide, and there was one passage of play where his movement helped create an opportunity for Garnacho that might have won us the game.

Garnacho perhaps took a little too long to get his shot away, allowing the Fulham defenders to recover, but I thought Maatsen's involvement in creating the opening was excellent.

It's particularly encouraging when you consider where he was physically at the start of the Manchester City game, because I didn't think he looked completely up to speed at that point, which was understandable given the football he'd missed.

Playing against City and then getting more minutes against Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup appears to have helped him, and against Fulham he looked much sharper, more confident and capable of maintaining his intensity for longer periods.

Ironically, while the Bournemouth result was disappointing, that game may have been beneficial for Maatsen individually because he needed those minutes to rebuild his fitness.

There will obviously be occasions when he comes up against difficult opponents defensively, and Fulham had some players who performed well in wide areas, but I thought he handled himself well at both ends of the pitch.

I've seen some criticism of his defensive performance, which I don't particularly agree with, because I thought he was one of the few Villa players who managed to maintain a decent level throughout the game.

What I also like about Maatsen is that he offers us something different depending on the way Emery wants to set up. He can provide natural width when Villa need somebody to stretch the pitch, but he's also comfortable moving into more central positions and contributing to the build-up.

That versatility is particularly useful when you consider the different attacking players Villa now have available, with Garnacho, Manzambi and others capable of operating from the left but offering very different qualities.

I think Maatsen is beginning to make the position his own, and although there will undoubtedly be more competition when everybody is fit, I wouldn't be surprised if he remains Villa's number one left-back for a long time.

Given the problems we've had in that area of the pitch, it's encouraging to see somebody starting to provide a bit of consistency.
