Andoni Iraola faces a key decision on his future, with interest from Athletic Club and Crystal Palace, though AFC Bournemouth remain hopeful of keeping their manager.

Will the Bilbao lure be too much? Sam Davis & Tom Jordan

Andoni Iraola faces a defining few weeks in his managerial career, with the Bournemouth boss yet to commit his future beyond the summer. While there remains every chance he stays on the south coast, interest from both his spiritual home, Athletic Club, and now Crystal Palace has recently emerged.

Speculation first gathered pace following confirmation that Ernesto Valverde will step down from his role in Bilbao at the end of the season. Iraola, who made more than 400 appearances for Athletic during his playing days, was quickly identified as a leading contender to succeed his former mentor, prompting understandable concern among Bournemouth supporters.

However, developments in Spain have since shifted the narrative somewhat, giving Cherries fans some serious hope.

Athletic now focusing on Edin Terzić?

Reports suggest that Edin Terzić is now the frontrunner for the role, with advanced talks already underway. The situation is far from resolved though, not least because Athletic’s presidential elections at the end of the campaign could yet influence the final decision, therefore Iraola’s path back to Bilbao appears less certain than it once did.

Throughout, Iraola has remained measured when discussing his future. He has admitted the developments in Bilbao resonate with him emotionally as a supporter, describing Valverde as his "biggest reference" in football. Yet he has also been clear that any ongoing discussions are centred on Bournemouth, not external opportunities.

Crystal Palace's ambitious interest

That stance, though, has not deterred interest elsewhere, as Crystal Palace are reportedly preparing an ambitious move to lure Iraola to Selhurst Park, with Oliver Glasner set to depart at the end of the season. Palace, fresh from an FA Cup triumph last season, and with European pedigree, view the Spaniard as an ideal candidate to build on their recent progress.

For Bournemouth, Iraola's impact at the Vitality Stadium has been incredible, keeping the Cherries competitive and evolving their style, so the club will be eager to secure continuity.

Ultimately though, the next three weeks could prove decisive - a window in which he says he will communicate his future plans. With Athletic Club’s managerial situation still unresolved and Crystal Palace circling, Iraola must weigh up loyalty, ambition and opportunity. Whether he remains on the south coast or embarks on a new chapter, his decision will shape not only his own trajectory but also Bournemouth’s direction heading into next season.
