Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium plans face delay after the May 11th committee meeting was cancelled, with BCP Council requesting more info. While early enabling works can continue, postponements mean that timelines can slip, raising fan concerns over capacity and whether phased targets can be met.

AFC Bournemouth have been informed by BCP council that the planned committee meeting on 11th May regarding Bournemouth's plans for the Vitality Stadium has been cancelled, despite submitting its application on time.

BCP Council have requested further information, which the club is now providing, however this means the meeting is to take place at a later date in May.

On afcb.co.uk, Cherries are suggesting that the delay may affect construction timelines, however, it seems that the work on initial enabling phases - which has had full approval - will be able to continue, with updates to follow as more details emerge.

The Stadium Development Timeline

Earlier this month, we wrote about the timelines for the development of the Vitality Stadium, the first phase of which has been targeted for completion before the 2026/26 season. This includes demolishing the current Ted Macdougall South Stand, erecting parts of a new South Stand, of which some lower tier seats will be available, as well as in-filling two corners - together with some perimeter work.

Some fans have voiced their concern about the news, with one fan suggesting it may negatively affect the attendance for the new season should there be any delays.

On the Back of the Net supporters' Telegram chat, Steve from Verwood, wrote: "Bad news. If the capacity isn’t increased in the summer then there will be 600 FEWER tickets available every game for General Admission tickets"

Whether this is the case or not is yet to be established, and it is hoped that AFC Bournemouth will furnish supporters with more details over the delays as soon as possible, but given the very tight turnaround, it brings into question whether the targets for each phase can be met.

Why Delays Can Be So Common

Unfortunately, delays in a stadium construction project like AFC Bournemouth’s redevelopment of the Vitality Stadium are actually quite common. Reasons for this can include environmental impact assessments, transport and parking studies, or design or safety adjustments.

Even small requests can cause delays because new reports must be produced, plans may need to be revised, this effectively resetting an application timeline.

AFC Bournemouth have been keen to stress throughout the project that their working relationship with BCP Council has been positive, however reading between the lines, there seems to be frustration for many with Vitality Stadium at the wait times, not least because of the committee scheduling and bureaucracy that comes with any significant building project.

For Bournemouth, it isn’t just a simple build - it’s a live stadium redevelopment, which adds complications, because work must be phased around the football season.

The club is ready to move forward, but projects like this will always move at the speed of planning approval, not the ambition.
