Marcos Senesi has been a standout for Bournemouth, anchoring their defence with elite stats and composure. His form has attracted interest from Liverpool, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and FC Barcelona, leaving his future finely balanced.

@ Sam Davis

Marcos Senesi has been nothing short of outstanding for AFC Bournemouth once again this season, stepping up as a defensive leader following key departures at the back. Under Andoni Iraola, the Argentine has thrived in a progressive system, combining aggression, composure, and technical quality.

He has started all but one game for the 2025/26 campaign (which Bournemouth lost), with 2,660+ minutes in the tank, emerging as the Cherries' defensive anchor and progressive hub following the summer exits of key centre-backs Dean Huijsen and Illia Zabarnyi.

Data underlines his impact too, as he ranks second in league-wide in clearances (109, trailing only Virgil van Dijk's 132), boasts elite interception numbers (24-40 range across trackers, top-percentile), and leads defenders with 37 blocked shots (98th percentile among centre-backs).

Plus, his passing stands out too, with top-quartile progressive and dangerous passes plus 77 accurate long balls (second only to Joachim Andersen), fuelling Bournemouth's counter-attacking threat (joint-most in the league) while posting 4 assists and a solid 7.1 average rating. He has however, yet to score this season, which is quite uncharacteristic!

This blend of physical dominance and composure on the ball has driven 9 clean sheets in his games, making Senesi not just reliable but transformative in Andoni Iraola's high-pressing system. Now wonder the following teams are interested...

Liverpool

A reunion with Arne Slot has been suggested by Anfield Watch, who previously worked with Senesi at Feyenoord, adding real weight to the speculation. Liverpool are reportedly attracted by the opportunity to sign a proven defender on a free transfer, and Senesi’s familiarity with Slot’s style could make him a seamless addition at Anfield as they look to reshape their back line.

Everton

Elsewhere, Everton have emerged as a more pragmatic Premier League option, reports Football Insider. With uncertainty surrounding several of their current defenders, Senesi has been described as a potential “upgrade” who could bring both experience and stability. Indeed, former Everton chief Keith Wyness - who led the club as CEO at Goodison Park from 2004 to 2009 (and now operates a consultancy for elite sides), believes Senesi would thrive at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

"I do think full backs and strikers are where we’re going to be looking, and that may be where the emphasis will be rather than on the position where Senesi could work for us".

Tottenham

North London presents another possibility, sense GiveMeSport, with Tottenham Hotspur reportedly "holding talks" over a summer move. With Roberto De Zerbi expected to oversee a rebuild and doubts over the futures of key defenders, Senesi could become a cornerstone of a new-look Spurs side. His ball-playing ability and leadership would suit De Zerbi’s philosophy, while regular first-team football could be on offer.

Barcelona

Perhaps the most glamorous option comes from Spain, where FC Barcelona are monitoring him as a potential alternative defensive signing. In a recent tweet, transfer news expert Ekrem Konour has the Catalan club on a list of potential suitors.

The Spanish giants are weighing up multiple options, but Senesi’s performances in England have clearly caught their attention. A move to Barcelona would represent a major step up and aligns with the player’s reported ambition to test himself at the very highest level.

Despite all the interest though, Bournemouth are not out of the picture. The Cherries are building something impressive under Iraola, but whilst the head coach's future in unclear, the prospect of European football could change everything.

If they manage to secure a historic qualification, staying on the south coast may suddenly become just as attractive as any move abroad.

For now, Senesi stands at a crossroads. Europe’s elite are circling, but Bournemouth’s rise offers a compelling alternative. His next move will be one of the more intriguing stories of the summer, and it may not be as straightforward as it first seems.
