Uncertainty surrounds Andoni Iraola’s future at Bournemouth despite strong progress and an unbeaten run. Fans fear missing out on Europe could prompt his exit, leaving the club weighing continuity against preparing for a potential managerial change.
AFC Bournemouth currently do not know who their manager will be next season, and supporters are getting twitchy. Andoni Iraola has worked wonders at Vitality Stadium, but there a concern that not achieving European football could lead to his departure.
As the 2025/26 campaign draws to a close, Bournemouth are in a curious predicament whereby they do not know who their manager will be next season, and concern is starting to creep in amongst the Cherries fanbase.
The brilliant Basque boss has improved the club season-on-season, and having extended once already, this will be Iraola's third season in charge at Vitality Stadium.
Constant improvement amid mass change
The first campaign saw him break a club record of points gained in a top-flight campaign, and his second saw him supersede this tally, also equalling the side's best ever league position.
This campaign however, has been somewhat different for Iraola, with huge personnel changes and an unenviable injury record. Yet despite that, Cherries have relentlessly flirted with European qualification throughout, and currently sit three points behind seventh placed Brentford.
Providing continuity amid the loss of Kepa Arrizabalaga, Milos Kerkez, Illia Zabarnyi, Dean Huijsen and Dango Ouattara was always going be a challenge for the Cherries boss, yet the start of the season saw a run - perhaps powered by a siege mentality - which helped Bournemouth sit in second place by match-week nine.
However, the inevitable dip then occurred, and with the loss of Antoine Semenyo around the corner too - Bournemouth needed to find another way to become competitive, and thanks to some clever tactical shifts and bringing understudies like James Hill to the fore, Cherries have now gone on the best unbeaten run in the Premier League. This hasn't come without it's concerns though, because Bournemouth have drawn too many games.
A huge unbeaten run, but fans want more
In many ways it's ironic that fans are frustrated, because at the start of the season, given the personnel departures, a mid-table spot at this stage would have been looked upon positively.
Of course, we can only hypothesise where Cherries would be without Iraola, but many fans suspect that it wouldn't be as high as we are right now.
Despite that though, fans want more, because it has often felt that the substantial amount of draws have been almost self-inflicted at times, therefore supporters are frustrated that we are not pushing higher in the table.
Why Europe could be so pivotal for Bournemouth...
It's not just the woe at potentially missing out on far-flung tours around the continent next season that they are concerned about, it's the worry that - without European football, the club's hierarchy might not be able to seduce Andoni Iraola to stay.
Currently, we have no idea what the future holds, and with time ticking down - AFC Bournemouth will want to know where his head is at. They'd prefer to be planning for another season with him, but there is also a significant chance that they'll have to oil the wheels of contingency, as they look to hunt a successor that can continue where he has left off.
