Brentford player ratings as two red cards saw the Bees suffer their first defeat of the Premier League season at the hands of Liverpool.

Brentford's unbeaten start to the Premier League season was ended as Andoni Iraola's Liverpool made the most of a second half numerical advantage to secure a 2-1 win at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Keith Andrews' side had led the game 1-0 after Keane Lewis-Potter's header put the Bees in front, however a red card to Yehor Yarmoliuk for a headbutt on Jeremy Jacquet just before half time proved costly as the home side struggled to contain the Reds in the second half.

Victor Munoz levelled the scores just past the hour mark as he raced in behind down the right hand side, cutting back onto his left foot to deliver a fine low finish into the far corner before Alexander Isak delivered a poacher's finish in the box to hand the visitors the lead.

Brentford fought valiantly to try and equalise against the odds late on, however any hope of a dramatic equaliser quickly faded when Vitaly Janelt picked up a second yellow in stoppage time to reduce the West Londoners to nine men.

Brentford Player Ratings

Starting XI

Caoimhin Kelleher - 6

Unable to do much to prevent either of Liverpool's goals. Made one or two decent interventions elsewhere to prevent any further damage.

Michael Kayode - 8 (Man of the Match)

An excellent display, both defensively and offensively.

Showed some fabulous ball carrying going forward, completing all four of his four dribble attempts, whilst also winning nine out of his 10 duels in the game.

Sepp Van Den Berg - 6

Didn't look particularly out of place at the back on his first appearance since May.

Will no doubt improve the more he plays and gets up to speed.

Kristoffer Ajer - 8

A superb, battling display in defence in tricky circumstances.

Won three out of three tackles, making eight clearances whilst winning five out of seven ground duels and three out of four aerial duels.

Keane Lewis-Potter - 7

Delivered a superb header to put the Bees in front on the stroke of half time.

Looked assured defensively in the first half however struggled after Liverpool were handed a numerical advantage, getting beaten by the pace of Munoz for Reds' equaliser.

Yehor Yarmoliuk - 3

Looked relatively assured for 45 minutes until a headbutt on Jacquet saw his afternoon ended prematurely due to a moment of stupidity which ultimately proved extremely costly.

Vitaly Janelt - 5

Worked incredibly hard in the middle of the park as usual, however lost a few too many duels and was sent off late on for a second yellow card.

Dango Ouattara - 7

Will be disappointed to have been one of two changes as a result of Yarmoliuk's red card, having put in an impressive display in the first half.

Caused Liverpool a few problems with his pace in behind and put in a solid shift defensively, including a superb tackle on Mac Allister which initially looked to have given away a penalty before VAR showed a clear touch on the ball and subsequently overturned the on-field call of referee John Brooks.

Mathias Jensen - 6

Like Ouattara was one of two who fell victim to the red card and was replaced at the break.

Looked relatively composed on his return to the starting XI and tidy on the ball as usual.

Jaidon Anthony - 7

Put in a hard working performance at both ends of the pitch.

Came agonisingly close to setting up an equaliser with his low cross across the face of goal unable to be turned home by Thiago.

Igor Thiago - 5

Delivered a great cross to assist Lewis-Potter's opener, however looked shot of confidence in what was a lacklustre display in front of goal.

Had more than one good opportunity to get onto the scoresheet throughout the course of the afternoon but was unable to find the net, albeit somewhat thanks to the impressive defending of Jacquet and Virgil Van Dijk.

Substitutes

Kevin Schade - 6

Worked hard to use his speed and aerial prowess to provide an important outlet up top with the Bees a man down.

Will hopefully be back fully fit and ready to start for next week's trip to Hull.

Mamadou Sangare - 6

Did a decent job at breaking up play and played one excellent through ball to Anthony to set up a big chance for Thiago to equalise.

Can expect to play an important role in the coming weeks, with Yarmoliuk now banned for three games and Janelt also banned for one.

Aaron Hickey - 7

Won 100% of his duels and completed 100% of his passes in an impressive 20 minutes at centre back in which he was required to nullify numerous counter attacks to keep Brentford in the game.

El Hadji Malick Diouf - 7

Won two out of two tackles, battling hard at the back and providing his usual crossing threat as the Bees pushed for an unlikely equaliser.

Mikkel Damsgaard - 5

Faced a tough task of getting on the ball and providing creativity in difficult circumstances, overhitting a few too many passes as he struggled to find the quality needed to produce a chance at an equaliser.
