Brentford were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United at Old Trafford despite Mathias Jensen’s late strike giving Keith Andrews’ side hope.

Brentford’s winless run continued at Old Trafford as Keith Andrews’ side were beaten 2-1 by Manchester United, with missed chances from Igor Thiago proving costly before Mathias Jensen’s late strike set up a tense finish.

The Bees were competitive for long periods and had opportunities to take something from the game, but United were more clinical in the decisive moments. Casemiro put the hosts in front before Benjamin Sesko doubled the lead, leaving Brentford with too much to do despite Jensen’s 88th-minute goal.

Thiago passed up Brentford’s best opportunity on 35 minutes. A quick one-two between Dango Ouattara and Mikkel Damsgaard opened United up, with Ouattara releasing the striker through on goal. However, Thiago slipped at the crucial moment and his scuffed effort was gathered by Senne Lammens.

Seconds later, he was involved again. Thiago latched onto a lofted pass from Mathias Jensen, but Ayden Heaven recovered to make a decisive last-ditch challenge, taking the ball away from the forward and forcing it back towards the goalkeeper before he could get a shot away.

That was the frustration for Brentford. They were not short of moments, particularly during a first half in which United looked vulnerable defensively, but the final action was missing. Against a side chasing Champions League qualification, those moments carried extra weight.

United made Brentford pay. Casemiro opened the scoring after a set-piece routine, heading in from Harry Maguire’s delivery to give the home side the advantage. Brentford continued to play with purpose, but the second goal made the task significantly harder, with Bruno Fernandes creating the chance for Sesko to finish.

Andrews’ side did not fold. They kept pushing in the second half and eventually found a way through when Jensen struck from distance late on. The midfielder’s goal gave Brentford hope and changed the tone of the closing stages, with the Bees applying pressure as United tried to see the game out.

There was no equaliser, though, and Brentford were left with another result where the performance contained enough to encourage but not enough to change the outcome. The defeat extends their winless run at a damaging point in the season, with the European race still tight and fixtures running out.

The concern for Brentford is not effort or competitiveness. It is turning those elements into wins. At Old Trafford, Thiago’s missed chances and United’s greater efficiency made the difference.

Brentford now have to respond quickly, with difficult fixtures still to come against Manchester City and Liverpool, as well as home London derbies against West Ham and Crystal Palace. If they are to keep their European hopes alive, the next step has to be converting competitive performances into points.
