Another one of those nights under the Gtech lights. ‘Tough place to go’ cliché epitomised to a tee. An all-round near-perfect evening. Here’s my take on each individual performance from Friday night:
Caoimhin Kelleher: 7
Another sound display from our highly dependable number one. Good with the ball at his feet and helped drive the team forwards with quick passing. Reliable when called upon, with his best save coming early on, denying Pedro Neto. Stayed switched on during an evening where an imperious defence left Chelsea chances few and far between.
Michael Kayode: 6
This young man’s talent knows no bounds, but he’s struggled a bit this season, and that continued on Friday night. Didn’t show his creative side like we’ve seen before and was looking shaky defensively. Struggled to attack open spaces like he usually does and gave the ball away a touch too often, putting the defence under unnecessary stress. Only a blip, he’ll come roaring back after an international break where he could make his debut Italian appearances.
Kris Ajer: 7
Despite efforts from Chelsea, Ajer was at the heart of a defence that kept the first clean sheet against Xabi Alonso’s side. 9 defensive contributions alongside a hard-earned clean sheet show that this was another sturdy performance from the Norwegian who has come into his own after a successful summer with Norway at the World Cup. Sepp van den Berg will be doing well to displace Ajer from his defensive stronghold.
Jannik Schuster: 8.5
Excellent defensively all game long. A tough task for a youthful defender making just his third Premier League appearance, and my word, he took his opportunity in the spotlight. 16 defensive contributions, excellent on the ground and in the air, and largely looked good on the ball. A back post assist for Jaidon Anthony’s opening goal rounded off another remarkable player who looks to be the full package. He is raw and certainly has his imperfections, but before too long this young man will be performing like this week in week out, and looks set to be keeping captain Nathan Collins out of the side for weeks to come. My MOTM by quite a distance.
Control of the game from minute one on Friday from Schuster / Source: ReutersKeane Lewis-Potter: 7
A weak clearance created an early opening for Chelsea, but apart from that, another fairly faultless display. Experience as a winger shone through once again. Looked really impressive going forward and created some dangerous runs down the left flank. The energy he has baffles me every single week. Always there when you need him defensively and offensively. A real workhorse and a mainstay in the lineup at the moment.
Yehor Yarmoliuk: 7
His 100th Premier League appearance for the club delivered another strong display running the midfield. Up against tough opposition in Rogers and Palmer, Yarmoliuk put together a tidy 70 minutes and played a huge part in securing a win and a clean sheet. A real talent and another consistent performer. Physically ridiculous this season too. Looking strong and more than happy to get stuck in and leave his mark. All you can wish for from a defensive midfielder who continuously plays like he’s older than just 22.
Vitaly Janelt: 7
Together with Yarmoliuk, he worked hard to ensure the midfield and attacking threat from Chelsea was nullified. Did a good job on Palmer and showed some real quality on the ball. Fans know what to expect every week from Janelt. His consistency and being a cornerstone of an established Premier League side has earned him a well-deserved and arguably overdue first Germany call-up.
Mikkel Damsgaard: 7
A tough start to the season this time round has led to the tricky Dane finding himself on the bench often. Given the start on Friday night by Andrews, I think he did enough to be happy with his performance. Beautifully swinging in the corner, perfectly for Schuster to nod across goal for Anthony to tap in, before a perfectly executed ball into the speedy Kevin Schade to create the second goal, which Thiago tapped home. A performance to reignite that spark and give him the devastating confidence we’ve seen before. Nice to see.
Kevin Schade: 7
The form winger for Brentford at the moment. Didn’t leave his mark on this game as he has shown before this season, but made some good off-the-ball movements and troubled Chelsea in behind like usual. Superior in the air once again. Played a key part in the second and third goals. A good evening's work from a man not short on confidence at the moment. He’s found his edge, and clearly knows he’s the man of the moment, and long may it continue.
Jaidon Anthony: 7.5
Got in some nice positions, looked a threat, and always looks forward whenever he has the ball at his feet. Very rarely see a backwards pass from a player who looks to be enjoying his football at the moment, and is certainly keeping £40m signing Dango Ouattara out of the side. Hard work was rewarded with a goal that set Brentford firmly on their way to a huge three points. I’m a big fan of this lad.
Igor Thiago: 7
Make no mistake about it, he’s had an underwhelming start to the season. Did look like it was going to be another game where he’d fly under the radar and hardly make an impact on the game. Ended up getting into the game, where he finished with 6 touches in the box, 3 shots, and a much-needed goal. His data this season has suggested that his first goal of the season was more than overdue, and there it was on Friday night. On a plate for him to all but confirm the win for Brentford. Happy for him, and without doubt will be the beginning of another big season for our Brazilian we’ve all fallen in love with.
A release of emotion from Igor Thiago after his long awaited goal / Source: ReutersOff the bench, Fabio Carvalho scored his second goal in as many games as he makes a fast start upon returning from an ACL injury. Heartwarming stuff, with lovely comments from Keith Andrews after the game alluding to how much of a top guy he is, and how deserved his brilliant return has been. Aaron Hickey once again came on and looked so secure. Another incredibly reliable option off the bench when legs are tiring. A player I would be very content with starting, too. Mamadou Sangaré was restricted to just a 20-minute cameo where not a foot was put wrong. Lack of minutes, much to the despair of FPL managers, but I can’t see him staying out of the team for much longer, maybe on a rotation with Janelt/Yarmoliuk.
