As Brentford defeat Ligue 1 side Rennes in their penultimate pre-season friendly, we take a look at three things we learned from the result and the performance.
On Saturday afternoon, we saw a productive run out from Brentford as they beat a strong Rennes side 4-2 over in France, with plenty to be positive about, as Igor Thiago, Ethan Pinnock, Dango Outattara and Callum Wilson got on the scoresheet for Keith Andrews' side.
So, without further a do, let's take a look at three things we learned from the game.
Callum Wilson can be a serious asset this season
Although there was general positivity at the signing of Callum Wilson on a free transfer this summer, it probably isn't the most exciting signing the club will make, especially when you break your club transfer record soon after.
However, today showed that he could be a serious weapon for the Bees this season. The former England international came on as a sub at half time, and by the 49th minute, had a goal and assist to his name. The way he cut the ball back for Ouattara to score was very clever.
Even during his prime years, Wilson was known as a poacher, a fox in the box. Not really someone known for his general play, but he showed another side to him today. Although he won't be a starter, it shows that, when necessary and probably off the bench, he and Thiago could link up quite well together.
Last season, Wilson started 11 Premier League games for West Ham United (21 games off the bench), and scored seven goals, this is the exact sort of productivity in limited minutes that could do Brentford the world of good next season.
The squad depth is looking good
This is a good seg way into the second thing we learned. As Wilson has shown, there are now some serious options off the bench. As well as the veteran striker, Brentford were also able to bring on Carvalho, who looked very sharp, and there is still Kevin Schade - a Germany international - to return too.
Last season, there were too many draws, particularly towards the end of the season. 0-0 draws with the likes of Fulham, Leeds United, Bournemouth and so on. Having more depth to bring on in the latter stages could help turn those draws into wins.
It remains to be seen what the club do in the transfer market over the next three or four weeks, but you'd imagine with one more attacking player brought in - perhaps someone who can play off the right hand side - Brentford will be in serious business squad wise.
Igor Thiago is a mentality monster
After the incredible moment of being called up for Brazil's World Cup squad, the tournament did not go as anticipated for Brentford's number nine. The striker struggled in their opener against Morocco, received serious critics, and then did not play another minute for the rest of the tournament.
That could seriously bring someone down. Destroy their confidence. Make them second guess themselves. But there is no doubt that Thiago looked fired up today, hungry to go again, and made sure he got himself on the scoresheet in the first half with a close range finish alongside some excellent movement.
Brentford fans will be very much looking forward to him banging in the goals again next season, and putting the World Cup disappointments in the past. A very good day all around.
