At lunchtime on Friday, Brentford have now officially confirmed the signing of left-back El Hadji Malick Diouf from Championship side West Ham United.

Brentford have officially announced the signing of number one left-back target, El Hadji Malick Diouf from Championship side West Ham United.

The club have confirmed that the defender has signed a five year contract in West London, with a further option of another year included too, with the fee - as it often is - being undisclosed.

Manager Keith Andrews gave his thoughts on the signing, saying: "We're really pleased that we were able to sign Malick.

He's a player that fits our ideal age profile, with lots of room to still develop.

I think he had a really good year at West Ham in his first season in English football, and some of the qualities and attributes he has as a full-back really add to an already impressive part of our team.

I'm really keen to get to work with Malick."

Although it was an inconsistent first year in the Premier League for Diouf last season, which is understandable considering West Ham's collective struggles, he showed signs of why he was so highly rated before moving to the Hammers. Despite the tough season overall, he still registered five assists and created five big chances from left back.

Last season brought Premier League minutes for the 21-year-old, but he also stepped onto the World Cup stage with Senegal, starting twice in three appearances. It is easy to forget he only made his international debut less than two years ago, yet he already has 23 senior caps to his name.

Brentford’s move to bring in another left-back might surprise a few, considering the options already on the books. Keane Lewis-Potter has filled in capably, even if defending is not his natural game, but with Rico Henry and Aaron Hickey both having their share of injuries lately, it is hard to argue against adding some extra cover.

Diouf brings senior experience and international pedigree, but there is still plenty of room for him to grow. At just 21, he is only at the start of his journey, though he has already shown he can handle himself at a high level.

A debut at Leeds United won’t be possible because he registered too late. But depending on how quickly he settles into training, Sunderland next weekend could be a more realistic target for his first appearance.
