Brentford Under-21s have been crowned Professional Development League winners for 2025/26, securing top spot despite a three-point deduction earlier in the season and building on last year’s national title.
Brentford Under-21s were crowned Professional Development League winners on Sunday after a 2-2 draw with Swansea City Under-21s at the Gtech Community Stadium gave them the point they needed to finish top of the table. Ethan Laidlaw opened the scoring for the young Bees, Swansea turned the game around through a Morgan Bates double, and Romelle Donovan’s second-half free-kick brought Brentford level again to seal the title.
The achievement is notable on its own, but even more so given the setback Brentford had to overcome earlier in the campaign. In November 2025, the Premier League announced that Brentford had accepted a sanction agreement after breaching U21 PDL substitution rules in an August fixture against Hull City. The punishment was an immediate three-point deduction for the 2025/26 U21 PDL season, along with a suspended £5,000 fine. Brentford have still finished first in the league stage despite that deduction.
This season also marks an important change in the competition format, which helps explain why Brentford’s latest success should be understood a little differently to last year’s. In 2024/25, the Professional Development League was split before being decided through the play-offs, with Brentford going on to win that knockout stage to be crowned champions. For 2025/26, the Premier League introduced a combined league table, with all league-stage results feeding into one overall standings list and the team finishing first being crowned league winners. Brentford have done exactly that, ending the regular campaign at the top of the table despite the three-point deduction they received earlier in the season.
That means Brentford have now backed up last season’s play-off triumph with another first-place finish, this time by showing the strongest consistency across the full league campaign. Rather than coming through the split format and then winning the title through the knockout rounds, they have finished top across the newly structured table and secured the league honour on that basis. It is a different route to success, but another significant achievement for the club’s Under-21 group.
Head coach Sam Saunders said he was “really proud of the group” and pointed to the consistency his side had shown since the start of the season. He said the challenge had been set “at the beginning of the season” and that maintaining those standards over the full campaign to win the league was “massive.”
There is still more to come for this group as well. After finishing top of the league table, the Under-21s will now move into the end-of-season play-offs. While they have already secured the league title through their first-place finish, they still have the chance to add another honour before the campaign is over. Having won the play-offs last season under the previous format, Brentford now have an opportunity to follow this year’s league success with another strong run in the knockout stage.
